It's suprising that people get so heated over this, but you have articulated your stance in a smart and convincing way!

"I don’t want to wonder in 20 years who I’m married to & whether he only liked me because I was the mother of his children."

That describes my parents to a T. It seems like they don't even like each other and haven't for years. I've been married for 8 years and out of the house for 11, and believe me when I say that visiting is rarely a pleasant experience. Zac and I were together for nearly five years before our first child came along so I know that we at least like each other for who we are, and I'd like to continue to foster that relationship. :)

Casey (moosh) did a post about this I think on her babble blog that I really liked. I come from a different perspective though I very much so admire yours. My parents had/have a very unhealthy marriage. They are hardly examples of what I would want my marriage to be. I have no doubt in my mind that I would choose my children over my husband. I don't know exactly what that is, but I admire that you are so secure in your marriage.

Really loved this post. Jimmy and I were together for 13 years/married for almost 8 when Daniel was born. We were together long before becoming parents and god willing, we will be together long after D leaves the nest. One of the toughest parenting issues with which I struggle is the feeling that I am supposed to put my child first and feel guilty if I don't. So thank you for your honesty & reality check!

The lady is Ayelet Waldman, a renown writer. She's married to Michael Chambon and has 5 kids. I was coming to post the same thing about her! She wrote a book called Bad Mother and addressed her essay and Oprah appearance in it. Highly recommend it!

Perfectly expressed!
I've felt the same way lately. Can't win for losing, right?
Working moms are happier? Mom enough? Now this?? I'm so over all of it. I choose to live in the gray area where some days I feel like a rock star mom and some days I wonder what the hell I'm doing. Some days I feel like a pretty great wife and some days I wonder why the heck he puts up with me. It's all good. It's called being a human and not some robot perfect reflection of a media vision.
Love love love the sentiment about family and sons and husbands. We vowed to put each other first in order to build a strong family, but it is hard sometimes.
By the way.... fab photos of you and the hubby!

I'm so happy to see someone write this. For the first few years of my son's life we both put him first and each other second--with good intentions, of course.
And three years later on the verge of sending in my divorce papers I realized I had not been fully present any more than he had. We both had been lacking in giving each other the attention we needed.
That is not something I will take for granted as we work (struggle) to rebuild what we had. So for those who say it's selfish it really isn't for all the reasons you gave. I hope that you and Doug can look at one another in 20 years knowing you not only still love each other but that you taught Harrison by example how to value his own relationships.
