… i would have agreed with this 100% prior to this year… we found out this spring that my kiddo has a peanut allergy… so at trunk or treating this weekend, I was delighted (and so was he) at getting handfuls of dum dum suckers, tootsie rolls, big boxes of raisins, glowstick bracelets, stickers, and even a juicebox! we only got a few candybars that i had to quickly take from him, and give away to another trick or treater.
I honestly cannot imagine Trick or Treating with a peanut allergy, so my hat is off to you! Harry’s little girlfriend is deathly allergic, so we are super-careful around her.
Same boat Liz. Keira has a deadly peanut allergy so we are passing out peanut-free candy that we can easily swap for the stuff that will kill her. We’ll have to slam it down when so goes to bed to get rid of it. Oh darn!
This is a super stressful holiday for us though. I had to do some serious candy research to find the safe stuff. What sucks is that even if it is peanut-free it usually is processed on shared equip. Bring on the Dum-Dums and Twizzlers, Goldfish, stickers and glo sticks! Have a safe night!
…it really is stressful. it’s amazing (annoying) the number of candy products that are “processed in a facility that also processes peanuts”. seriously. seriously. and in the end, i really did feel guilty taking the candy that he was so proud of “earning”… i wasn’t as sneaky as i had thought i was… and we had some tears last night despite replacing all of his poison-candy with dum-dums, tootsies, raisins, and glow sticks.
Ha! I love stocking up on all the Dum Dums and small tootsies. They are perfect to keep in the purse as good behavior bribes for the kids when we are out and about. This is how I go shopping and not have a zillion requests for this treat or that cereal. They each get a sucker as soon as we get loaded in the big plastic two seater cart.
Thoughts behind this: Parents preparing for trick-or-treating go thru quite a difficult dinner, trying to get the kid to eat before he gorges his little maw full of candy. I figure, at least, at least, if this is in their bin, they have something that won’t send kiddo into a pre-diabetic state!
hahah! We are the house giving out small Tootsies this year. But in our defense, last year we bought a TON of candy and only had 2 kids make the trek up all our stairs and we ended up eating all that stupid candy ourselves. With these we won’t feel so badly about tossing them out.
As a non-chocoholic, your “Meh” is my “Worth a Sugar Coma”. For now, I’m on the couch blogging. Next year it’s on {you can take a 4 month old trick-or-treating, right?!}.
I’m a little bit allergic to chocolate (triggers migraines for me), so I definitely disagree that the full-size candy bars are the best. I like the mini-ones so that I can treat myself to a little bit, and not feel bad about wasting the rest of the candy bar. There are some houses in the neighborhood that give out mini bags of popcorn, sodas, juices, and bags of chips or pretzels – LOVE those houses! We’re one of the families that leaves a box of candy on the front porch because we like to go trick-or-treating together. Every year when we come back we always have some candy still in the box. Sooo…I guess that we don’t have greedy kids in our neighborhood?
Love it! The last one reminds me of a commerical I saw last night where the little boy walks on the porch and there is a bowl of candy with a sign “Please take one” He grabs one. Then a little girl walks up and grabs a whole handful. He says “Hey it says to take one” She goes “I can’t read” and bounces off the steps.
We did “pretty good” this year and only got one group at the door for the entire evening. I actually tried to find full-sized bars in the Halloween section this year since we get so few trick or treaters in our small neighborhood, but fun size was all the rage, apparently. Worked out well because I ate the first two bags I bought.
I have to confess, though, that in years past I’ve put the bowl out with a “please take one” sign. Sometimes momma doesn’t want to be bothered.
I have to disagree with where the Blow Pops are put. To me those should be around 3.5 stars, as they’re just as tasty as full sized candy bars but last a lot longer. And if we’re discussing the full size pack of Starburst then I believe they should be higher as well. If we’re talking the 2-pack of Starburst then I’d knock it down to 1 star.
Totally agree for myself but I am loving the dum dums this year. My kid is completely into lollipops! A lot of the other stuff is too hard or chewy for him.
Hangs Head. I put a bowl out. I have a sick 7 month old (double ear infections, sinus and upper respiratory infections) so we couldn’t have the dogs barking all night! But I checked the candy and replenished it twice both times before it ran out so I think since I had excellent candy in the bowl I get five stars!
You know what I LOVE? Those little flavored Tootsie Rolls–the vanilla ones are the BEST. But why is it that you can only seem to buy them in the big package with the gross Dots and all that other junk?
My 2 year old exclaimed “WOW! Lollipops I love lollipops” and a man was so excited someone enjoyed his treat so much, he went into the house and brought out a big bag and emptied into her bucket. Remind me to THANK HIM later. LOL. But seriously, I don’t think anyone was ever as excited for a dum dum.

My hubby is deathly allergic, so we think our kids might be too. This means I can’t have PB in the house at all, which is the saddest thing EVA.

Raises hand, totally guilty of putting a bowl out, with Please take one.

OH MY GOD, YES.
My coworker used to keep those in her office until she went through an entire bag in like, one day.
