We’ve known for awhile that Harrison & Tuck were pretty much partners in crime. They’re good pals & patiently put up with the others craziness – the best kind of friendship.
As there were already about five dogs on the farm, we decided to board Tucker for the Easter weekend. I swung the car into the kennel’s parking lot & Tuck hopped out on her leash as I pulled Harrison out of his car seat. He looked around with general curiosity as I signed Tuck in, handed over her blankets, & marked the calendar that we would be back on Monday. “Tell Tuck bye-bye!” I instructed Harrison. He waved cheerfully as the kennel worker took her into the backroom. With a smile, I thanked the staff & headed out the front door with my son but without our pup.
“Doggie?” Harrison whispered as we walked towards the car. He swung frantically in my arms, finding that Tuck was nowhere to be seen.
& promptly lost his toddler shit.
“DOGGIE!!!!!!” he screamed, flailing in my arms. “DOGGIE! DOGGIE! DOGGIE!!!!!!” The fat tears began rolling as I strapped him in the car seat, his wails pounding in my ears.

Climbing into the front seat, I grabbed my phone & did what any mom in 2011 does – I snapped a picture of my child’s agony. & then I laughed. He was just so PITIFUL, sobbing “Doggie” over & over again as I stroked his cheek & promised that we would see her in a few days.
Sure, I hurt when my baby hurts, but it made my heart feel all warm & pitter-pattery that whatever we’re doing with Tuck & Harry is working. The months before his birth when we worked on the nursery becoming a “quiet room.” The hours we’ve spent supervising the two of them on the floor together. The gentle heeding of how to pet Tuck softly & with love. It’s working & as a result, we’re witnessing the greatest friendship blossom.

Reunited & it feels so good.

So sweet. “Doggie” is one of Little Dude’s first (and only) words. I’ll remember this for when it happens to us!
Ok this made my cry!! We had a black lab named Colie when our daughter Caroline was born. We said good bye to Colie after 12 years just before Caroline turned 2. Anytime now that she sees a picture of Colie or a black lab, my angel gets all excited and calls Colie’s name. It is amazing how a child and an animal bond! I don’t think Caroline will ever forget her. I’m so glad I have many pictures like the one of Harrison and Tuck!
Holy hot dog he’s getting so big!
I point and laugh when my kid cries too. Best. Mom. Ever.
awww that picture is so sweet.
ohhh..so sweet! I love that last picture!
I love the relationship Annie and Joshua have! She’s so, so good with him and he loves to blame all the “uh-ohs” on her!
Boys and their doggies. Awesome.
Every morning, the first thing my son does is come into my room and start frantically searching for his dog. Once he sees him, he squeals, “Hi, Dog!” about 3 or 4 times in a row. Griff is seriously the highlight of my son’s world.
SO cute! Our little girl loves dogs, even though we don’t have one, and I can totally see her doing this.
So sweet. Look how happy they are together!
THAT is the sweetest thing EVER!
I wouldn’t have been able to leave. I would have turned around and got the dog and took him to make my son happy.
Bowen is that same way with Louis, our bulldog. Everyone morning as soon as Bowen is up from his crib he runs to the gate “Lou lou! Lou lou!”. Gotta love it!
Aww!! I know he was thrilled to see her when y’all got back! I wish we had a dog for Wesley to play with like that…but alas, DH said no.
That is so sweet.
J and AJ have a love/tolerate relationship. J loves him and AJ tolerates J. I’m thinking once I have a fenced in back yard, it may be time to think… gasp… Puppy.
That’s awesome (both the friendship and the losing of said shit).
My pug and I grew incredibly tight, as did my pug’s relationship with my nephew. When my pug unexpectedly died it confused my nephew as to where he went. He was barely 2 when Dozer died and he still randomly asks where Dozer is (he just had his 4th birthday).
Oh, I love this. Harrison is 2 weeks older than my daughter and SO similar. She and our dog, Pablo, have a special relationship and it’s weird to think that there was a Pablo before her! Here is a classic picture of them… I have albums of photos similar to this!

Love this!! Rylie loves our dogs too! She repeatedly calls to them “woof, woof, woof, woof” over and over lol
My heart just melted into a puddle on the floor. Thanks.
Our daughter loves our 2 doogs so much. But, I’m not sure either would stop licking her long enough to snap this picture.
adorable! Solo loves Nora with all his heart. They sleep together every night and almost every naptime too. Whenever I think she’s making me crazy i remember… dammit… we are stuck with her!
Haha, this happened to us this weekend when we dropped ours at the groomer. He was devastated.
Mine does this everytime we even drop the dog off at the groomer for a couple of hours. So sad!
Too Sweet! I love watching our son with the Pups. It’s so heartwarming.
I admit, this post makes me a little sad. The tale of MY son and our beagle could be called “She’s Just Not That Into You.” He loooooves Ashley, and is always calling her name and trying to pet her and hug her, and she is really not interested. Sometimes he’ll even call her when we’re away, or if he’s at daycare, as if he can just make her appear (so cute!!). Because he’s still so little he ends up smacking her sometimes even when he’s trying to be gentle, so she never knows what she’s going to get and generally steers clear.
How freakin sweet!
This warms my heart. Jack and L aren’t to the snuggling point but L always wants Jack to participate with him. Be it dinner or pretend tea parties. Jack jack always gets what we get. Jack tolerates him…that is about it. Maybe one day he will return the admiration.
I have to say that I love this post. I grew up on a farm and my dog, Dog (yes, that actually was her name), was my very best friend. My parents just let me run all over the place because, as long as Dog was with me, they knew that nothing bad (i.e., snake!) would ever happen to me. Dog died when I was college. I had her my entire young life, long than most friends. It’s amazing that your son has such a great companion!
That picture of the two of them is seriously heartwarming.
I just had to comment on this post b/c I think it is probably my favorite one ever!! Stories about kids and dogs and their incredible bond get me every time!!
I am right there with you taking pictures of my kids when they freak out over something that totally doesn’t need to be freaked out over
Adorable story.
How sweet! (And GREAT pics!)
His little face actually made me tear up. But I totally get the “had to get a picture” moment – it’s one of those you want to remember forever.
I just love it. There’s nothing sweeter than a boy and his dog!
I’ve been waiting for this post since you poste dthe pic on FB. I hope and pray CC and Nola have this same bond bc it’s simply heart warming.
P.S. I just want to hug Harrison in that pic, although.. I would do the same and take the picture first. LOL
Harrison looks so sad/cute in that picture. Poor little guy.
My 1 year old daughter just learned the word dog and now every morning when I wake her up, “Dog?” she asks. When she finally gets to see our dog, Murdoc, she squeals with happiness. Nothing like the love kids have for pets!!
Awww that is such an adorable picture!
