Remember that time I clogged up an industrial toilet? This is even more embarrassing which means I have officially achieved the impossible.
A few months ago, one of my favorite sites posted Happy Blankies for sale at a steal. (basically like TOMS shoes, but with children’s blankets) For two weeks, I waited for this blanket to arrive on our doorstep, picturing our little family cuddled on the couch to watch Curious George with Harrison tucked under his Happy Blankie, drinking a sippy of milk. One glorious evening, we pulled up & a wee brown box sat at the base of the front door. “His blanket!” I gasped, running to rip it open.
oh. my. goodness.
It was better than I could have ever imagined. Plush minky. Satin trim & backing. Little velvet eyes. I ran my fingers over it lovingly, pulling it up against my cheek & closing my eyes…. “Ummm….babe? Isn’t that for him?” Nate asked. Immediately, I recognized my adversary in a 33-inch tall tow-head. This was war.
That night as I pulled a pajama top over Harrison’s head, Nate made sure Monkey was in place for bedtime & asked, “Hey, why doesn’t he sleep with his new blanket tonight?” My mind raced. I wanted that blanket. Think, BA, think! “I haven’t washed it yet!” I argued. Saved by the germaphobe. Placated, Nate tucked Harrison into bed as I blew him a kiss & we closed the nursery door.
After dinner, we curled up into our respective places on the couch & this time, I tucked the Happy Blankie around my legs & happily wiggled my toes in the minky as I channel surfed. The heat rose in my cheeks as I felt my husband’s incredulous stare, but I remained stoic & did not compromise my position. Oh my, this blanket is soft. Oh my, it is warm. Oh my, it must be sewn with the thread of unicorn hairs. I happily snuggled the entire evening until Nate rose with a yawn & announced he was going to hop in the shower.
I waited until I heard the water running & bolted into the bedroom, quickly throwing on pajamas & leaping into bed. I snuggled down in the sheets, arranged pillows, & closed my eyes so that when Nate emmerged a few minutes later, I looked peacefully asleep. I heard him cut off the light as he crawled into bed & threw his arm around my middle, pulling me in close. “I love you,” he nuzzled into my neck.
“Yeah, babe. Love you, too!” I twittered nervously.
silence. Nate’s hand twitched. I held my breath.
“You did NOT bring that blanket to bed.”

So something I would do. Without question.
Oh my goodness that is too funny. I really don’t blame you one bit. Those baby blankets are so comfy.!
I share your shame. We bought a pet blanket at Costco for the DOG, but she’s never gotten to use it, not even once, because it has become my fuzzy couch throw blanket. Don’t feel sorry for her, though; she already has 3 big cushy beds in the house.
holy universe, i’m not the only one!
every other week at the grocery store, i convince my husband that ben (our 19 month old) *needs* the organic apple cereal bars. at a perfect 80 calories, whole wheat, and apple delightness, i don’t think my toddler has ever actually ate one…muahahahaha..
I am a very tactile person, so I completely get your love of the blanket. I recently purchased some throws for the living room that I am LOVING! Different than minky but just as soft, maybe a little silkier. I got them at Pier 1. The zebra throw. http://www.pier1.com/catalog/browse/0600.rugs-pillows-windows/tabid/514/CategoryID/960/List/0/catpageindex/2/Level/a/ProductID/4898/ProductName/Zebra-Fuzzy-Throw/Default.aspx
I.completely.understand.
my hubs and i have had actual conversations about how much we wish we could sleep in our son’s crib because of his amazing blankets…
ok… here’s the deal – lets start a company that makes minky/satin/lovies for adults!
A HA HA HA. *dies *
Now I feel better about feeling up my kids’ blankets
“Oh my, it must be sewn with the thread of unicorn hairs”
i LEGIT lol’d.
LOL! Totally something I’d do. Ha! Now you need to buy a second blanket!
Haha!
I may have to buy one of these for my son. He loves “blankies” – maybe he’ll stop taking mine…or maybe I’ll steal his.
L.M.A.O. !!!! Love it!!
HIlarious. And so something my husband would do.
Yea, I said. My husband. lol
Can you please post a picture of it?
UMMMMM I have to confess…I bought a Dara & Co blanket from Kids Steals one day. My son of 2 years old has not gotten to use it because it went directly to the bed with me. My husband jokes that his wife has a blankey
I sleep with two of my kids’ blankets every night. It’s impossible not too.
Mmm, minky. Maybe Nate can buy you the full-sized version for your birthday.
Or Mother’s Day! That’s only a month away.
LOL!!!! I love it!
My hubby would love this story. He likes to cuddle with a “Blankie” too. Not a particular blankie though… any blankie will do.
I made my own super soft minky blanket!! I’m afraid after many washings it looks just as ratty as my son’s favorite blankie. But it is still super soft and wonderful! I may have to make myself another one soon!
haha too funny
I love this. Now I will be going to buy a blanket like that for myself!
Hahahaha. Love it.
So funny!
I too love the minky blankets but I also have a confession. I love silky tags and I have a taggie blanket that I sleep with and rub the tags. I have had the fascination since I was little and my mother used to always say I would grow out of it. Now when I’m stressed sometimes I rub the silky tags in my shirt neck to calm down. I’m the crazy one……
Omg! I’m dying!! & you’re such a southern lady with, “he cut off the light”. Plus, i love how Nate is always so seductful haha
No shame in snuggling up in a cozy blanket!
Ok totally off topic but it seems weird that you guys eat a separate dinner from harry. Why don’t you do family dinners?
It’s just a timing thing, unfortunately.
We don’t get in the door until about 6:15pm & there’s just not enough time for me to cook dinner, get it on the table, & eat before his bedtime routine starts at 7pm. & if I was doing kitchen stuff, I wouldn’t get to spend time with him playing or going for a walk before bed.
So on the weekdays, my sister gives him supper at 5pm before I pick him up. On the weekends, we eat every meal as a family.
comment reply not working on my computer. anyways. well that sucks. i love family dinner time! i hope you guys can manage a change in schedules/commutes/something before he gets to be too much older.. that is not a very good long term system… you miss out on the whole family bonding over dinner thing every night. Or maybe as he gets older you can push bedtime back a bit. for my 21 month old we shoot for lights out at 7:50 since he gets up at about 6:15am.
we both commute an hour each way and it’s not going to keep up forever, not with $4+ /gallon. i am already contemplating what career sacrifices i’m going to have to make. Blah.
yeah, we definitely miss it. We’ve tried putting him to bed later & he just won’t do it – we get a screaming mess of toddler – & we’re already having to wake him at 6:30 even though he’s in bed at 7:15. Kiddo just likes his sleep.
Hopefully as he gets older, he’ll be able to stay up later. I’ve heard that usually happens
oh, if you get to make some career switches that would be awesome! Right now I’m pretty stuck with our commute & stuff. Blasted housing market & economy!
eta: i mean it’s not good from a “i wouldn’t want to miss out on that” perspective, not a “you’re ruining your child’s life” perspective.
I want to go to bed at 7:15 too, I think harry has the right idea!
Just a comment totally unrelated to this post but can I just say how much I love seeing Tim Tebow every time I visit your blig. Yummy! Where can I purchase him?
I know, right?!? ::swoon::
I read this blog entry and then shared it with my husband. Later that evening, while placing a Scentsy order, I tried to talk him into a Scentsy buddy for our son’s room. He brought up this entry and said that Lenny the Lamb would become mine and Lucas would never, ever get to use him. Boo for husbands who just don’t get it.
