Shake what your momma gave you. Shake off what Oreos gave you.

(I wrote half of this & then WordPress crapped out & started deleting posts & drafts & comments & I’m 2.5 seconds away from beating my head against the desk, so here we go…again!)

Goodbye, 2 lbs!  Hope to never see you again!

A mixture of Nutrisystem lunches, watching portions, getting in veggies, & busting a groove helped me shed a couple icon smile Shake what your momma gave you. Shake off what Oreos gave you.  & it really wasn’t that hard…okay, minus the blueberry-muffin-turned-bagel fiasco.  Because for two days, blueberry muffins sat on the workroom counter, taunting me.  Y’all, I adore baked goods.  But I resisted & on Wednesday, they officially disappeared without me touching one morsel – & then someone dropped off plates of fresh bagels, cold cream cheese, melty butter & those are my LOVE LANGUAGE.  It was pure torture.  But I stayed strong.

But you don’t want to hear about delicious baked goods.  So we’ll talk about Zumba, the exercise class I now take twice per week (it’s only offered Monday nights & Saturday mornings).  I was pretty nervous because I’m incredibly clumsy & haven’t been in a dance studio since I was eleven & wearing pink ballet shoes.  But I’ve known the instructor for about a year & she was super-welcoming.  The class was small (only three of us!) & we shared some good laughs while sweating it out.

Zumba is pretty much just like this —–> old fat jiggling machine 300x232 Shake what your momma gave you. Shake off what Oreos gave you.

You just shake your fat off.

It’s an incredible work out.  Kari kept us moving our feet, waving our arms, gasping for breath & swiveling our hips.  Even though my hips just don’t move like that.  But I didn’t trip!  I mean…I stumbled a few times.  But I didn’t eat the wood floor so I’m going to go ahead & say WINNING!   We did a warm-up that included so dance moves & stretches, & then really whipped our hips into shape.  An hour later, I had sweat pouring down my butt crack but I felt so energized & full of endorphins.

It was hard, though.  Not just the sweat, but seeing myself in the mirror for an hour & watching my blubber shake around uncontrollably.  I was the largest person there & it just hammered home that I NEED to be there every Monday night at 8:30pm on the nose.  That was a tough pill to swallow, but if I’ve proved one thing this year, it’s that I can take pills.  So Zumba, welcome your new regular member.

p.s.  Just Dance II for the Wii is also a pretty decent sweat for those nights when you don’t feel like listening to Jillian Michaels or going for a run.

Did you do anything new this week?  Challenge yourself with anything you’ve avoided in the past?  Did you have to jump any major hurdles, like mountains of fresh bagels?

  1. Yay for you! Resisting those bagels is a feat! . . . Oh, and Zumba for Wii? Hard.

  2. Susan Fowler says:

I LOVE Zumba! I used to do it 3 times a week when I lived in NC… guess I should check that out again!

  3. Cassie says:

So far I’ve been to scared to take a Zumba class, but maybe I’ll get around to it soon!

I avoided buying girl scout cookies this weekend so I’m considering that a win!

  4. Steph says:

Dude, WP was pissing me off like you would not BELIEVE this morning. I don’t know what the heck is going on with it.

I’d love to do Zumba but I don’t have anyone to go with. No, wait. I take it back. I do. But she has literally been a Zumba teacher and I don’t want her laughing at my chicken with a head cut off dance move I’d be doing. Because I have zero rhythm.

    Congrats on the loss!

  5. Becky says:

    Two pounds!!! Awesome.

Zumba sounds incredibly fun and I think I would look like a total dork doing it. I lack coordination in all things!

For resisting bagels and muffins in one week I think you deserve a medal.

  6. Kathy says:

way to shake off those two pounds!!

  7. Suzanne says:

Zumba is awesome. I had to get past the I feel like a dork phase first. It’s addictive once you start.

  8. This week was SO hard for me. Seriously hard. There were so many temptations. Way to go on the two pounds, darlin’!

  9. Vee says:

I’m glad you enjoyed Zumba! Our class is so big that we have to do it in the basement of our Elks club, so there are no mirrors. I vastly prefer that situation – I can dance dance dance away and NOT know what I look like while doing it!

  10. Alena says:

My gym has zumba 5 days a week, and there are about 8 classes total…problem? They are all taught by different people. Some of them suck because they are just too easy…if I’m not breaking a sweat I’m wasting my precious time. But there’s one chick…Joan. Joan is like a petite energizer who will get in your face dancing HUGE pushing you to do MORE MORE MORE DOOOO MORE DAMN IT!!!!

She’s awesome. I love her. It kills me. Dead. But I love her. Down side? She sprained her ankle. I am Joanless.

  11. jenni says:

    So I started Medifast this week and it was HARD! The weekdays are pretty “easy” but the weekends freakin’ suck. I held strong though… keeping my eye on the goal {which is to lose 30lbs!}

  12. Shaina N says:

I DESPERATELY need to brush off the Zumba DVDS. I got them for Christmas (asked for them) so that I could practice up before going to a class. I’m that self-concious. I’ve not made it through the practice one yet.

    Exercise is my Achilles heel.

  13. Cat says:

i just got Zumba for my PS3 and it is awesome! def helps me workout when I dont feel like running

  14. Liz says:

Zumba scares me. I have white girl coordination and I know I would be the laughing stock of the class. Good for you for going and enjoying it!

  15. Karen says:

    Congrats on the 2 pounds!

Although it sounds absolutely unappealing in every way, I know that I’m in desperate need of something that will make “sweat pour down my butt crack.”

I think I’ll use that as my criteria for a workout program from now on. No sweat down the butt crack? No thanks.

Really, great job going for it with the Zumba class. That sounds extremely intimidating, and I’m totally jealous that you’ve got the balls to do it. Please keep us updated on how it goes.

  16. Katie says:

Standing in front of that huge mirror, shaking what jiggled, and being able to compare myself to everyone else in the room was a HUGE eye opener for me. It was terribly depressing but also a motivator. I love Zumba!

  17. Jen Green says:

Good for you! Congratulations on establishing a healthy routine for yourself. I’m thoroughly impressed.

  18. Melissa says:

My belly dance studio offers Zumba but I haven’t started because I am already out of the house one night a week to do my belly dancing-which is my favorite thing to do (and is a great workout)!

But in an attempt to shed a few pounds decided to dust off the DDR for PS2 and do a litte extra. I wish it had a option to track additional calories burned for holding a 2 year old while dancing…. My daughter LOVES to dance but of course doesn’t get me saying “wait don’t step on that arrow!”

Congrats on the 2lbs! Keep up the hard work!

  19. Miranda says:

They are planning to start Zumba classes at the new gym. And I may just muster up the courage to go. Maybe.

  20. Stacey says:

I have been reading your blog since I was on The Bump. ust wanted to say hello and thank you. I read your post where it “clicked” the same day it was clicking for me. Your post moved me and that day I started up my WW again and have lost 3 pounds! Congrats to you and thank you for the motivation!! I am too chicken to Zumba in front of others so I ordered the videos :)

  21. Kimmie says:

I did my first Zumba class this past weekend, and I seriously haven’t sweated like that since high school marching band in 100 degree weather. But fun? Oh yes :) And even better? The proceeds of said Zumba class went to Jay’s Hope for children with cancer! That’s totally worth showing up all those skinny girls ;)
I tried Zumba for Wii, but it wasn’t near as fun as the class was…I lovedlovedloved The Michael Jackson Experience for Wii though, and it’ll work up a sweat, too!

  22. Krista C says:

I just started Zumba and absolutely love it! I come out of that class dripping in sweat and feel better than I do after an hour of gym time. The downside is that my dream of being a salsa dancer will never come true because, sigh, my hips just aren’t made to move like that either. Oh well, I’m sure everyone else in the class get’s a kick out of watching me try to shake my booty :)

  23. Scarlett says:

I puffy <3 Zumba! Started going to classes at the beginning of the year, and I am so addicted.

  24. Heather says:

I’m still too chicken to try Zumba but would love to Wii Fit & Dance it out if only my hubs hadn’t lost half our games in the move last year! Agh! He’s going to be on a mission this weekend for them by golly!

  25. I love Zumba! Hopefully, I can start up a class again after the babe comes.

  26. Shahny says:

Yay for Zumba!! My busy schedule only allows me to go on Saturdays, but I sure LOVE it

  27. Betsy says:

I’m in a mommy and baby bootcamp class right now. I totally know how it feels to be tfe largest person in the class. Its do embarrassing. Like you said though, I just need that to be my motivation. Good luck!
