If you’ve never lived in North Carolina, it might seem damn stupid that every time snow is forecast, people shove their heads up their assholes & start running around trying to purchase five loaves of bread & three gallons of milk. But it’s just what we do, okay? Kind of like registering for china patterns & making jello shots out of team colors on game day. & here’s the other thing – nobody can drive in winter weather.
Yeah. I’m looking at you, Yankees. I do declare! You’re no better. In fact, I would wager that you might even be slightly more dangerous than us inexperienced Southeners because you’re used to driving in snow. & this, my friends, is not snow. It’s ice.
So whenever the winter weather strikes, Nate & I typically pack an overnight bag & stay at my parents since we are both required to be in our offices in inclement weather (& they live closer). This week, we fully planned on staying Wednesday night for the “brunt” of it & then hopping home on Thursday evening. Especially since it was barely a dusting of snow & a little ice. But then it kept icing. & it melted some. Temperatures were dipping, stuff was re-freezing, & I had just driven to Chapel Hill to see my psychiatrist. I was exhausted from therapy with a pounding headache. & so we stayed an extra night.
p.s. therapy? so exhausting. as much as I love my doctor & enjoy seeing her, it drains the life out of me. usually I stop for tea afterward as a pick-me-up, but I needed to get on home this time. & she usually has chocolates in her waiting room, but there were these two random teenagers in there, eating all the chocolate & making out. humph.
But I had no extra clothes. So the past three days, I have worn the same brown tights & Frye boots, rotating two skirts & one sweater & two tank tops. I feel dirty, even though I’ve only sat behind a desk all day doing paperwork.
On top of it all, it has been a WILD week at work as the Christmas season is like, BOOM! upon us.
I am highly, highly looking forward to a hot shower tonight & curling up with a glass of wine in my fluffy robe. I cannot wait to be back in my own home with my own couch & my own fireplace & my own books.
& oh look for Christmas!
except they’ve already changed the forecast. three times. go figure.

Totally feel for you! We had 3 snow days last week where the entire city shut down. While it was awesome the first day staying in jammies and hanging with the kids, by day 3 I just wanted my routine back!
Hope you make it home soon and in the interim your parents have a well stocked wine stash.
Maija
i cant believe we might get a white christmas *fingers crossed*
And here I sit in the desert yelling at everyone on the road that can’t drive when it rains. Different type of weather, but the same bunch of idiots.
This Yankee CAN drive in the worst of it, ahem!
That’s what they all say
Ha….so true about how people in North Carolina react to snow. I’m from Colorado but went to school in North Carolina, and I always though it was hilarious. There would be a tiny sugar-coating of snow on the ground, and I felt like I had the roads to myself while everyone was cowering in their houses. I admit that the ice was nasty, though.
Dude, I decided to take a “therapy” break during the month of December. It’s no good if it’s stressing me out to have time to get there. I told her we’d meet up again in January.
Oh, & I’m going to ask her to start carrying chocolates in the waiting room. Because damn, that’s just awesome.
Boo-hiss! I’m hoping to travel from the coast of Virginia to the mountains on NC on Christmas day! On the bright side, I’m trying not to get my hopes up so much.
But our little car can just not handle snow, and especially ice!
i’m from virginia BEACH and we hardly ever get snow but whenever we did they’d shut everything down and it blows my mind. especially now that i live in maryland and we get tons of snow. VA Beach schools were closed today, but not here in MD. weird.
Here, if it snows even a cm, schools, work, everything is shut down. The road to my house even shuts down. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GET HOME??! Holy crap, I’m in Canada, we should be more prepared even if it’s just to satisfy the stereotypes.
Winter just hates giving me reasons to like it
LMAO I am from cali we freak out over rain, snow would cause a panic the whole city of San Diego would close down in fear. Which is why I stay home in my nice warm little house in NC there is no way I am driving with the crazies if ya’ll can’t do it I am not going to even try! Maybe after I live in Seattle for a few years I would get the hang of it.
As a Yankee from the snowiest city in the continental US I can say that most of us can drive in the worst of it (I still don’t like it!). Sometimes we get many FEET of snow in one day and still have to get where we need to go. But you are right that there are some who think they can drive at normal speeds in the stuff and that’s when accidents happen.
I don’t blame you guys in the south for going crazy over a few inches. Up here the towns/counties have the experience and the tools to deal with the white stuff more effectively. When we get a few inches it’s not a big deal because we know that the roads will still be clear. In places that don’t see it that often they have no reason to have tons of snow removal equipment lying around. So us northerners shouldn’t judge, because we hate driving with it on the roads just as much as you do!
Okay, 1.) I’m going to totally agree with you and say that we North Easterners? Bad snow drivers. Because most people up here are convinced the 4 wheel drive makes you invincible. And without fail there are always SUV’s and trucks rolled over left and right after a storm. I drive like 10, I’m an old lady when it comes to that stuff.
and 2.) I’m a little mad at you, missy. You go into the Christmas season with no expectations of white Christmas, whereas I, living up here, DEMAND IT. And right now? NOTHING. Not even an inch yet up here. And only a 50% chance of it even snowing before Christmas Eve. I’m living in the wrong place apparently!
Be safe!
I’m glad you’ve being cautious. The 4WD drivers down here are the worst, too, because they think they can drive at highway speed in any conditions. But I do have to say, we live in Morrisville and commute to Chapel Hill, and it’s been fine. So hopefully you’re safely home!
Pishaw. I’ll hear none of this bad driver bullshit.
As someone who lives in the land of ice and snow (Indiana), I will confirm that driving in ice is way worse than driving in snow. There’s jack shit you can do for ice. The problem is, around here, we’ll get ice and then snow on top of it and then people will drive on the snow before it’s plowed and the snow will freeze over….it’s a frigging mess.
I had a 1.5 hour commute yesterday than ended up being 3 hrs (one way) due to snow. It’s insane, and it makes me want to move to somewhere like NC so I don’t have to deal with it, but now you’re telling me that you have to deal with it down there, too.
Did I mention that the temps have been single-digits lately? At least it’s warmer than that there….
Enjoy being home tonight!
Coming from a Mid-westerner, I am jealous. It hasn’t even snowed but a little dusting here. Last year by this time we had already had a foot or two of snow. I really want to take my daughter out in the snow to play, and realllly would love a White Christmas. Send some snow my way
Sounds exactly how drivers are in TX when we get the ice too. Dallas just shuts down completely in complete confusion!
This cracks me up, that you make alternative sleeping arrangements for a little snow and ice but I have some southern friends as well and I have seen them totally panic for bad weather. Here in Michigan a foot of snow/ ice and the fact they don’t plow doesn’t even cancel school around here. I don’t like driving in it but we do and have never had an accident or close call and it is the the main reason we bought a Jeep Commander. Well I hope you get that shower and the weather god making it more comfortable for you soft foots out their! Have a great weekend!
We get ice in the north, too – my porch and driveway are encased in it right now
You forgot toilet paper. People stock up like they’re going to be on the hopper the entire winter, for crying out loud!
Hahaha! I’m in New Orleans and we have NO CLUE what to do when or snows. It’s only happened 4 times in my 29 years…when I was in high school, they thought it MIGHT snow and closed all the schools!
what’s with the yankee bashing? just because a few people moved to the south and forgot how to drive in snow and ice (and btw… we get ice in the north too) doesn’t mean that every yankee is going to end up in a ditch.
I am outstanding at driving in the shit storms…it’s the OTHER people that are terrible.
ahem.
Dubya tee eff is going on with the weather (also in NC)? It’s jacking up my holiday party plans for tomorrow. If I’m stuck with a house full of party snacks b/c of some freezing rain/ice junk, I’m gonna be mad. (insert mean face here)
<- in possession of 3 dozen eggs, multiple loaves of bread, 1 1/2 gallons of milk, and 30 bottles of beer. I need it… really.
I don’t want to brag(ok yeah I do), I live in south FL so I never have to deal with ice and snow. If I ever have to, I would probably not leave my house
My DH purchased 6, YES 6, gallons of milk, and 1 loaf of bread. Looks like we’ll be getting creative with our meals over the next week. *sigh*
