Pro: I still like running.
Con: I didn’t do much of it this week.
Pro: I got new running shoes!
Con: I got a blister.
Pro: My hips & knee don’t hurt when I run, thanks to the new shoes!
Con: I got a blister. Remember?
Pro: I got over my random new fear of running at night by just getting out there & doing it.
Con: I only got the chance to do it once this week.
Pro: Nate got to peace-out halfway through the week for a long-awaited golf trip.
Con: I couldn’t do my typical run-after-Harry-goes-to-bed deal.
This week was one of those classic RUN WHEN YOU CAN weeks. & unfortunately, I didn’t heed the warning in the beginning of the week. At the first of the week, it was threatening storms & pounding rains so I stayed in, promising that I would run at the later part of the week. Except I totally spaced & forgot that Nate would be gone. I did get a chance to run on Thursday after work by asking The Momma to keep Harrison for 30 minutes so I could take a quick jog around their neighborhood.
On Saturday, I decided to stay inside with the boys in the morning, promising I would run in the afternoon. Because y’all, this is North Carolina. When they say it’s going to snow, we all run out & buy bread & milk & eggs & then anxiously watch the skies for the snow that NEVER falls. Except this time, it snowed. All afternoon & into the night.
So considering I only got in one run, I’ll repeat Week 5 again this week.
Slow & steady, right?
Also, my hips had been hurting after running. I figured it was a mixture of a new way of moving plus the weight I’m carrying, but then I realized how old my sneakers were. So I grabbed a new pair of New Balance’s that are made specifically for running, rather than cross-trainers. Aside from the new blister (that only happened because my sock was too small & fell down during the last 5 minutes), I am THRILLED. My hips did not hurt the day after running. My knee felt great.
So yeah. There is something to be said for following the rules about replacing your running shoes every so often.

Congrats on fitting the running in! It IS a challenge.
I (with my runnning partner) completed week 6 yesterday. We ran yesterday morning at 7 a.m., and totally got to soak in the beauty of the snow, before traffic came out and the snow melted. It was beautiful.
First time commenting here! I love the blog and so so so appreciate how open you’ve been with everything over the past yearish. I’m mom to an 18 mo old and an 8 week old and love that you are in the thick of it too. I plan to start the C25K soon. Hopefully I won’t be too far behind you!
I also just moved to VA from MT and have learned lots about the South from you!
Thanks for doing what you do!!
Keep it up Momma!
I had one of these weeks as well…carry on!!!
Do you have a running store in your area? They will put different shoes on you and make you run while they watch your gait….I did this years ago and learned that I “roll” my ankles inward every time I take a step, so they hooked me up with super stability shoes (I can’t remember the real name but the shoes have a thicker platform on the arch to provide more support and prevent the rolling). Anyway, it made a huge difference and now I know I can’t run in “regular” running sneakers, which is good to know. My point? It might make your runs EVEN BETTER if you get fitted too!
They called for snow several times around here the past couple days, and nothing. Boo.
You are doing GREAT!! I’ve been reading and cheering you on every week
I used to run marathons and wrote an entry a long, long time ago with advice for runners just starting out – it’s here if you want to check it out:

The most important part I think is the part about trying the Balega socks especially if you are getting blisters. They are CRAZY expensive but I promise you they are worth every penny!!
blair,
as cliche as it sounds, you are really inspiring! i tried C25K a few years back and didn’t even really complete week 1. it’s something i’ve always wanted to try again, and i love your honesty on here. way to go, friend.
I started C25K and did ONE day. Between being sick and the holiday madness, I just haven’t been able to do it. Ugh, I swear I’m going to get back to it.
And I know exactly what you mean about the snow panic! It is very similar to the reaction when there is a hurricane coming. Oh, and by the way, love your North Face jacket… I have the exact same one
Not every week will be perfect, but it’s great you didn’t lose any motivation. I think it’s awesome you are continuing to do this even as we enter into the cold months, good for you!
Today is day one of my healthier life style- I’m hoping to keep my motivation up as well!

I second what Jacqueline posted above about running stores. Sounds like you found a nice pair on your own though. General rule of thumb is to replace shoes every 500 miles, which seems to be the limit mine have. I just mark in my running log when I start wearing the shoes so I know for sure how many miles I put on them.
)!
You are so right about running when you can and not putting it off. I’m guilty of putting it off when I shouldn’t and it’s frustrating to realize I missed my window of opportunity.
Have a great running week (and a great week in general
I’m a new follower of yours and you’re making me want to give this program a shot. I’m not a runner, yet I wish I was. I’ve run before and made myself do it, but it’s just not something I really enjoy. I’m thinking I should give it another shot. Who knows? Although, running in Iowa in the winter isn’t my idea of fun.

Can you give me the link to your new shoes???
Also, I have been talking with a friend of mine about running in the evenings and working out. But we both hate that we have to take 2 showers a day. 1 after working out and 1 the next morning. How do you deal with this? Or are we the only freaks that bathe too often?
would you like a wee bit of our snow too? America’s High Five got a bunch.
And I remember the day when I got REAL running shoes. I also got a blister, but my knees quit clicking. it was glorious. except for the damn blister.
dude. I had the same kind of week, minus the snow. here’s hoping we both get out there more regularly this week!!!
two things you probably already know:
1. track your mileage on runnersworld or map my run or whatever website you like so you can replace your shoes after the recommended mileage has been reached (so you don’t do it too often and waste $$ or not often enough and get hurt!)
and
2. the best socks EVER for not getting blisters are wright socks. http://www.wrightsock.com
My Jazzercise instructor (yeah, that’s right, I said Jazzercise … but there no sweat bands and leg warmers involved) said to replace shoies every 100 hours. So I figure every 200 days or so if you workout moderately.
My husband is a runner. I think he ran 400 miles over the summer. He keeps track with an iphone app. Anyway, we spend SO much on running shoes. He is constantly having to replace them because he wears them out so quickly.
I told him we need to buy stock in Nike.
I love my new running shoes. I’ve never had actual “running” shoes before. I wonder how long you are supposed to go before replacing them?
And I am on my 4th actual week, but on Week 2 in reality. No biggie

I so need new shoes too. The plus is that you got at least one run in… & that you could walk the next day. Win!
It was just a pissy week for me….

I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada so running outside has not been possible for me for a while. It is very cold here and we have tons of snow. But when I could run outside, I did it with my 2 kids in a jogging stroller. I know running is time for you, but have you considered putting Harrison in a jogging stoller on those days when you can’t fit it in any other time?
Keep up the good work…even when you have a setback or don’t run as much as you wanted to, don’t beat yourself up, just accept it and move on and focus on the success you have had and how far you have come already.
