This weekend was just what I needed.
No work. No weddings. No birthday parties or playdates or carpooling. Just me & the boys & an extra hour in my Sunday. There were pancakes & runs in the cold sunshine & maybe even an hour of Christmas music on Saturday morning, but I won’t fully admit to that because I respect the turkey. Sometimes.
Harrison was absolute perfection. Nate & I fully braced ourself for cries to wake us in the dark at the new 5am, so we hopped in bed by ten on Saturday night. This morning, I opened bleary eyes to sunlight streaming in & rolled into Nate’s arms. ”mmph,” he mumbled. I heard Tuck whine in her crate downstairs, & heard stirring from the nursery. By the grace of God, Harrison woke up at the new 8am, which put our entire day on it’s regular schedule.
Why does it feel so rare that life turns out that smooth?
Harrison also got his first haircut, which was really just a bang trim & I tell you, it literally pained me. PAINED. I kind of understand how parents let their kids get the “baby mullet” all in the name of not snipping the neck curls.
I snipped away with kitchen scissors while Nate distracted him. When I deemed them even & appropriate, I held the little trimmings in my hand.
Me: I can’t throw them out. I just can’t. He was born with these hairs on his head, you know.
Nate: What the hell else are you supposed to do with them?
Me: ::snaps fingers:: I KNOW. ::runs upstairs::
Nate: You’re not going to eat them, are you?
WTF, man. NO, I’m not going to EAT MY KID’S HAIR. Do I look like Dr. Lector? I just put them in a little baggie that originally held buttons to a blazer I bought at Talbots this past summer. & it’s taped inside his baby book.
oops, I missed a piece.

It’s okay if you want to nom his cheeks.
Tonight, we sat in the warmth of downstairs after dinner. The freshly-washed floors gleamed & the aroma of chili surrounded us while Harrison ran in circles, running up to Tuck & patting her on the nose, then running to me where I sat cross-legged on the rug. Smile wide, arms outstretched, he flung himself into my arms for a hug. & my heart gave it’s last pitter-patter as I died from the pure love of it all, gathering him in while he popped his thumb in his mouth & snuggled down into my lap.
I have rough days & rough weeks. Sometimes it comes raging out on the only outlet I have – this little piece of the internet. But at the end of the day, I am so absolutely in love with my kid & my life that I can barely stand it. & this weekend helped remind me just why I am so blessed.
What was your favorite part of the weekend? I hope you had a good one.

What an adorable picture of Harrison! Love it!
I had an amazingly plan-less weekend also and I loved it! The best part? Finally giving in to the boots and skinny jeans fad and joining in with the masses.
Glad you had a great weekend too!
I do want to nom his cheeks
Glad you had a great weekend!
I think you described my favorite part of my weekend. Rylie running around chasing the dogs and then running into my lap for a big ol’ hug. I love those moments of giggles, hugs and joy coming from my child.
Haha! Why was Nate’s first thought that you were going upstairs to eat the hair!? So funny!
Glad you had a great weekend! My moment was watching Wynn last night walking around (carefully) in his new fleece footie pjs. I wish all pjs were footies.
That was what I asked him! Like, WTF?! Who thinks of that?
& I love fleece footed jams. LOVE.
That photo is adorable. I could eat his whole self, not just his hair.
We didn’t fare as well with the time change but still had some awesome moments of pure sibling love. My daughter woke from her nap and came downstairs because she heard her brother squealing. She wanted to play with him. So simple yet it does such amazing things to my heart and soul. I’ve been is serious need of some heart warming lately.
Glad you had a good weekend!
Sounds like you had a weekend that has been long deserved! The best part of my weekend was just what you said. Me and my boys all weekend. But last night, my husband went out with the guys I was ecstatic (is that bad?). That meant bedtime was all me. And so I got to rock my little man for a few short moments before he went in his crib and those moments are what mean the most to me.
Loving your blog, as usual! Harrison is incredibly adorable! I came across your blog a few months ago and have been avidly following – I truly enjoy soaking up the strength you have in your writing.
I spent my weekend trying to also avoid giving in to the swelling urge to put up christmas garland … i almost put in some tunes but didn’t. i instead lit a fire and spent the weekend on the phone and texting with my best friend, who is being induced for labor seven weeks early tonight and wishing so badly she didn’t live on the other side of the country. In summary, I’ve been praying all weekend.
…just when I think the kid couldn’t get any cuter
Seeing Keevia let go of the couch and walk 3-4 steps WITHOUT ANYONE TO CATCH HER. Made my heart soar. Awesome.
Also, seeing her play so nicely with her first cousin who’s ten months older than her. It makes me so proud of her.
Your weekend sounds amazing!!!
GO KEEVIA!!!!!!
Beautiful weekend for you and the fam. And dude, his curls KILL me dead. He’s gonna break some hearts unless you teach him not to.
I drank for the first time in 15 months last night. This morning, I remember why I stopped drinking altogether. Enough said.
I Freaking LOVE your blog! Harrison is too much..He just keeps getting cuter and cuter..I don’t even know if cuter is a word, but Oh well. My favorite moment this weekend was getting up this morning and seeing that my husband had made cookies AND did the dishes!
“you’re not going to eat it, are you?” roltflmao!!
“Why, YES, Nate, Yes I am. It’s a little ritual we moms have. It’s a tradition, after the 1st haircut, we .. . ” wtf??? LOVE it!! Of course, this is coming from the woman who found her husband gingerly BITING (with his front teeth) the umbilical stump from our second child, because he wanted to know ‘what it felt like. Should we keep it?” NO! And now I have to get drunk!”
My mom is 61 and this year walked in her 5th Susan G. Komen 3 day. 3 day 60 miles in Dallas. She is 14 months cancer free after having a bi lateral mastectomy and she was number 213 out 2750 people. She is amazing and I was lucky enough to be here to watch her make this amazing accomplishment.
I know what you mean being in love with your family. I completely understand it. It was a fabulous weekend.
Your weekend sounds like perfection!
My husband and I direct a children’s youth choir and rehearsal today was perfect. Seriously, we couldn’t believe it. No rehearsal thus far has made us feel like we should have this job and today? It totally felt right. It gives me hope.
And yes, his cheeks are totally nom-able.
Harrison is so adorable! I absolutely love him hair!
Love this! and this is the sort of thing to link on my new Super Sunday!
And I still can’t bring myself to cut Joshua’s hair. He’s totally rocking the baby mullet.
He sure is a cutie pie!
Sounds like a perfect weekend! I am totally jealous of the sleep part. It is nice to hear the joy in your writing by the way. I know life has been tough lately and it is really, really good to know that there is some reprieve for you.
This weekend was Brayden’s 1st birthday party! We had a great, but busy and exhausting weekend with family visiting. I just finally got my house in order tonight at 10 pm in time for the daycare babies to arrive tomorrow. It will pain me when we cut Brayden’s hair too! Although he had his first haircut at 3 months old…I’ll have to email you about that one. But those hairs are taped inside of his baby book as well! They’re the brown hairs that he was born with, unlike the blonde hair he has now.
omgggg creepo. shane got his first haircut this weekend too & i posted MY pics. copycat!
“bug hugs!”
This just makes me happy
All of it! We had a nice weekend at home too and H took her first official 3 steps and there were lots of giggles and naps. Yay for a good weekend! Plus, those cheeks… nom-nom-nom!!
Your kid is too stinkin’ cute. It kinda makes me a little sick. Just a little ;o)
This weekend we chilled at the house. Ansley has started crawling into my lap and just sitting. I love it. Several times this weekend, she grabbed a book and simply crawled into my lap.
Melt.
I love H’s little curls! B has had 4 hair cuts and now looks more like a 6 year old than a 14 month old. His first haircut snipets are in a baggie in his baby book as well.
I, like you, had an awesome weekend! It makes you feel so re-energized to be at home and do things that YOU want to do. Embrace it and love every minute of it!! (the babe is ADORABLE!!)
Glad it was a good one. I also had an amazingly unplanned weekend, which included lots of things crossed of the to-do list and just getting some time in with the hubs.
My un-favorite of the weekend would probably have to be beginning the process of remodeling our guest bedroom. This includes removing the 100+ shag carpet squares that the previous owners nailed down to the beautiful original hardwoods. Yes, 6 nails in EACH square. This could take a while.
eat hair?
creepy.
The rest of the post? perfection.
Glad to hear that you had a wonderful weekend! My favorite part of the weekend was going to the Mall of America with just Jesse & Hunter. We went on some rides, had lunch at the Rainforest Cafe, and did some shopping
He is so adorable and this post made me teary by the end.
My favorite part of the weekend was shopping with DH on Saturday, finding things to finish our office and discussing other improvements for the house.
I needed this post today
Thanks
Too cute. I need to cut Jacob’s…he has the straight-up white-boy baby mullet…no cute curls, just those hairs hanging over his collar if he wears a collared shirt.
And H look just like your hubby in that pic!
i especially loved the 430 am wake up on sunday. i havent slept until 8am since about early 2008. whose dumb idea was it to turn back the clocks anyway???? u are so blessed that you have a good sleeper!!!!!!
Cute little curls!
Oh, he’s so delicious! Nom nom nom.
Ohmygod. EAT the hair? Love it!
Also. That photo of Harrison is beyond adorable. That face!
eat them? oh man! too funny!
