A place of my own.

If you’re a Facebook buddy, then you know the angst that has been my own workspace.  I’ve spent the past two years blogging from a wee ladder desk & about a month ago, as I was balancing my journal, planner, tea, Mac, & iPod, Nate said, “Babe, I think we need to get you a new desk.”  Sweet man!

& then I realized…I don’t have any place in the house that is “mine.”  We really did decorate the house together – I don’t put up anything without his approval.  & Nate has the garage.  He has his huge workbench with tools & the backyard for his putting green & golf net.  It’s not a pissing contest over who has more space…but I’d just like a little place where I can hang my sorority membership certificate, a few favorite pictures, jot down inspiration, etc.

So a few weeks ago, I dragged a few buddies to Ikea to pop my Swedish furniture cherry & perused all of their desks, but ended up purchasing two bookcase cubes & a top that we screwed on.  Toss in a few accessories & I have my own space.  I adore it.

& now when you’re feeling all creepy, you know exactly what I’m sitting at when I’m writing icon smile A place of my own.

looks great!! a little DIY tip, if you ever get sick of looking at your cork board, ie the boring brown hue that they are, you can paint it!! Ive repainted my $8 corkboard, that Ive had for about 15 years, a million times! its been purple, than blue, than black, and I just repainted it again back to purple. super cheap and quick fix, and makes a world of difference!

Yay, I'm so happy for you! Even though we just moved to an itty bitty apartment, I get my own little craft studio, which my 3-yo calls the Crap Room. Nice.

Hey, the door closes, and that's the important part, am I right?

Good for you! Looks great : )

I know what you mean about not having any space to call your own. I have felt like that for the past 4 years we've lived here, now, I finally have a desk for my computer (also a purchase from Ikea!) and some space of my own. It's a great feeling.

  17. Dana says:

Seriously, I love your style. So fun! Congrats on your new space :)

  18. Rachel says:

It looks great! Ikea is so amazing for little projects like that. Congrats on your own little nook to escape to when necessary.

Oh, where'd you get the "good things will happen today" sign?

  19. nora says:

I'm an IKEA nut – there, I said it. Half of my house is furnished with IKEA stuff, including all of my baby's nursery.

  20. Kim says:

Wow, when you do something, you really do it! It looks great, and now I'm off to bug Hubby about taking me to Ikea!

I love it! It's SO cute! I have an IKEA two blocks from me and believe it or not, have never been. ::hanging head in shame::

  23. Law Momma says:

that is FANCY looking! I'm suitably impressed, B!

  24. When you say "two bookcase cubes & a top that we screwed on," I don't think you created your own desk. Instead, I think "Wow, they sure had a lot of fun on a piece of IKEA furniture!"

You know you love me. :)

  25. angel says:

You've got a great eye. Nice space!

That's something I miss about going to work instead of working from home… my very own personalized office. Hmmm…. project?

    Thanks for blogging!

  26. Chrisa says:

I'm so jealous! I want my own space now. Too bad I live in a teeny apartment. Maybe I can make my own nook? Oh well, glad you have a place to be creative and yes, I will be imagining you writing there! haha. congrats!

    Love the new space BTW!

  29. Holly says:

I love it! It looks perfect.

I've never been to Ikea. We are in need of a desk and I think we are going to make the trip (the closest is 2 hours away).

  30. Eliza says:

Wow! What a lovely space! I love that you carved out a space of your own to write and journal, and drink tea. I really need to do this. It's important. Thanks for the inspiration!

  31. beabee says:

Okay, is it evidence of my dirty mind that I read your "I am horrified" post where you talk about sex right before this one and then interpreted "and a top that we screwed on" as referring to you and Nate doing it on the desk?

Or is that just because my husband keeps trying to nudge me towards the new guest bed, which I am trying to keep pure for guests?

I am truly sorry for taking the comments in this direction.

  32. Abri says:

I love it! I get excited when I think about setting up my own little office in our new house. Also, I adore that you hang on to your adpi stuff… I probably wear my letters once a week! pi love!

  33. Adriel says:

    Hooray for Ikea! It's my mommy-wonderland!!! :)

  34. Alexandra says:

Hi! came over a PPD site.

Just want to link up with you, and tell you I've had the same history, and I feel what you're talking about.

Just wishing you the best, and letting you know there's a lot of us out here.

Knowing there's others makes me feel better and not so "our of the ordinary."

    So nice to find you.

  35. Stephanie says:

Your new space looks beautiful! You've made me motivated to start brainstorming what I want in a space for me! Hope you are doing well!
