Life is a Beach. Art can be, too.

It’s so funny to see how nurseries transform over time – I know that I put so much time into designating a home for every baby item, thinking where it would be easiest to reach, what I would need immediately.  (ha! foolish)   Some mother’s will walk into an expecting nursery & cluck their tongue, knowing that the new mother will inevitably move things around in that perfectly-organized & labeled closet, just to make grabbing a burp cloth .2 seconds faster.   But I will say that with the exception of the lamp, which had to be moved across the room, Harrison’s nursery layout has stayed the same.  (oh, & now we always leave a stack of blankets on the blue dresser to grab at a moment’s notice, versus putting them away.)

Nurseries = paint, organization, & decoration.  Pretty much the Top Three Nursery To-Do’s.

After the paint settled in Harrison’s nursery, Nate’s job was complete but mine had only begun – DECORATION.  I lovingly picked out my Pottery Barn Kids bedding.  Painted a dresser.  Scoured for nautical-inspired things like weathered framed with rope stitching.  A sailboat mobile, hanging over the glider.

But when it came to his dresser/changing table, I was just plain burnt out.

Blog 1024x682 Life is a Beach. Art can be, too.

It stayed blank for MONTHS.  Finally, only a few weeks before his arrival, I slapped up an (unpainted, mind you) “H” onto the wall & cut construction paper into a sailboat picture.  No, really.  That’s what I did.  Unoriginal, boring, & I hated it.

I never knew what I wanted for that space.  I had ZERO inspiration.  Until JessaZG contacted me, I sent her a few pictures, & she whipped up this with her typical flair & talent:

dresser3 Life is a Beach. Art can be, too. Yep.  That’s Harrison!

It’s Harrison.  & a nautical/beach theme.  It ties in the teals & dark blues & yellows in his nursery.

In short?  It’s PERFECT.

When I opened the package up last week I literally gasped.  Jessa had sent me proofs but to be honest, I never though I would love it as much as I do.  I never thought I was a “silhouette” person.  Or a “modern art” girl.  But sometimes, we have to step outside our box to find something perfect.

& that’s what Jessa, as an artist, made this uncreative girl do.

& it’s what she’s going to do for someone else.  Y’all know me…I hate complicated giveaways.  So follow JessaZG on Twitter & Tweet this bad boy to enter:

Bam.  Done.  & then Jessa will select a winner in 3 days!

But the meat of this post – I’m most interested…how has your nursery evolved?  Or childrens rooms?  Or any rooms in your home?  I started thinking about this during the Twitter Home Tour & realized how often our homes & rooms shift to accommodate our lives.  (including putting together a bookcase at 11pm because you cannot take the look that a baby hurricane blew through your loft one more moment or you’ll scream)

Well, since our nursery JUST got completed it has def evolved. From an attic to a beautiful nursery. LOVE her stuff. Hoping I'll win!! <3 This stuff is right up my alley!

  2. Becca says:

Our living room in the apt has quickly become a play room for Jax. I am thrilled that we're moving into a (fairly large) house next week and he will have a room for all his toys! His room has only changed in that we took the changing table adapter off of his bookcase (IKEA) because we never used it and always changed him on the floor, couch or bed. Other than the usual transition of toys and clothes, his room pretty much stayed the same. He did take over our kitchen too!

  3. atlbride23 says:

Nursery looks exactly the same. The living room, however, looks like a daycare center.

  4. Jessa says:

love the placement. looking forward to the give.

  5. Nikki says:

I created silhouettes of me, my husband, and the dog when we first moved into our house and later took a silhouette maternity pic that turned out great. Waiting until my son's head rounds out a bit more to do one of him. Hard to do a silhouette with a flat spot!

In other words…love the artwork of Harrison!

  6. Anne says:

OMG! Our nursery (or lack thereof) has never been ideal. Nik was supposed to share a room with big sister Noelle…but that didn't work out due to sleeping issues. So we have a random crib in our bedroom without any other baby items. The remainder of the baby stuff is strewn about Noelle's room. It is an effing disaster! We are hoping (cross your fingers for me) to move at the end of June, at which point I am considering a very late twitter home tour :)

Love your nursery btw. And that sihouette? I am dying it is so gorgeous.

  7. pregali80 says:

Her artwork is beautiful. I want some. I love that on the changing table, glass canisters made way for the oh -so-practical plastic box of baby wipes. :)

Fyi, I live in a nursery. It's what happens when you and the baby move in with your parents. I'll have to do a post with pics.

  8. Diane says:

Our nursery/home has been a constant work in progress. It's pretty much finished but could still use *something* (and I think winning a picture such as yours would definitely help! wink wink) We moved into our house the day after we got home from the hospital from having our baby girl, so needless to say, we are STILL unpacking. The additional of toys and then the need to put away a huge swing and playmat leaves us constantly looking for space and new ways to organize.

Btw, your home is gorgeous (from the Twitter Home Tour)!

  9. metta1313 says:

We had these grand plans to pain Keith Haring paintings on the wall from his family series…well the husband did so I just sat around and waited for it to all unfold. Well it never did so our walls are bare…but we did get this painting framed and up. http://bit.ly/afUbOk Perhaps when Abby is older we will have her help decorate the way she wants it.

  10. Sara says:

Unfortch, the only thing that has changed in our nursery is that there's now dog pee stains on the carpet.

  11. K says:

The nursery started off with some sheep decals and went from there. It hasn't changed much, though things have been added in the past 7 months.

I absolutely LOVE the blue you chose for the walls!

    K from LifeofK

    PS. Hope I win!

  12. mrsthig says:

Nothing has really changed except for the fact that we finally got W's hand painted letters I got on Etsy on the walls. Otherwise, the nice, organized neat nursery we started off with is in a constant state of chaos. hehe

  13. Julie says:

Brayden's room is totally not how I envisioned it AT ALL. I am not thrilled with the outcome, but it does the job! :) I LOVE Harrison's room!

  14. HeatherBakes says:

    That print is gorgeous!

Our nursery hasn't really changed (just messier). But our living room, which stayed empty for the first 2 years we lived in this house, has evolved into Jack's play room. At least it's a room we actually USE now.

  15. Kim says:

Actually 'did' a nursery in our old house for our first, and adored it. It stayed a true nursery, as Violet was our only at the time and I had waaaay too much energy, it always looked cute. Then we moved into a fixer upper in bad, bad, bad need of fixing upping and had number 2 and 3 in 15 months time. Oh, and a miscarriage. So the nursery here was a room with baby things that I somehow got organized and as long as the room didn't smell bad I was happy! Love Harrison's room, may steal some ideas for my John's room when we get to finishing it!

  16. harmskills says:

tweeted… our apartment is under constant re-arranging! as will you home once Harrison starts crawling… then standing… then walking!

  17. i remember when i was in my last month of pregnancy and got with the "organization/have to buy everything in site" bug. and now there's crap all over the place. eh, reality won out :)

but now i'm in the mood to totally revamp ava's room after getting a glimpse of harrison's digs. it really is gorgeous!

  18. Theta Mom says:

I have to ask you – do you have another blog? Check out my recent post – were you the comment as Blair with your little icon? The site did not come here which is why I was totally confused. Just wanted to make sure it was you mama and not someone posing as you!

  19. Cindy A says:

Our nursery has change a bit over the past 6 months! I think our book library has grown! We also in the beginning did not have anything to hold her toys, and now we have one of those bin organizers. Her closet is now filled with clothes to be and outgrown clothes in plastic bins labeled. Other than that, we did a pretty good job guessing what was needed for her. You nursery is cute and Harrison's silhouette is beautiful!

  20. Megan says:

Our nursery started out with a crib (with bedding), changing table & a glider. Then we added Abigail on the wall with letters glued on to ribbons and the ribbons hanging from stick pins. My husband finally finished making her a dresser (which by the way is absolutely beautiful). Now we are just waiting on the hardware and her room will finally be complete!!

  21. griffenhc says:

Really beautiful artwork, but I twitter for no one – and I know I'm not alone. I'm sad there's not another way to enter.

  22. Shauna says:

While pregnant, it seemed I spend every waking hour cruising Ohdeedoh, Spearmint Baby and any other Nursery Design blog that I could find (not to mention your blog!). I hung out on Etsy.. saved all my inspiration pics in a directory on the harddrive and then started ordering! Hubs surprised me by painting the nursery and slowly I collected everything… crib and all was put together.. everything in it’s place. Bought some cool art on etsy that I was so excited to put up. Felix just turned 5 months old. I just hung his artwork the day before yesterday… sigh… good intentions and all. My excuse?? Parenting a colicy baby alone! Yup, that sounds good. :P

  23. Janelle says:

So hysterical – and totally true – that we end up moving things around to make it "two second faster to grab a burp cloth." I am a compulsive re-organizer, so our nursery is in an constantly evolving state!

And I think you need to give yourself more credit for your construction paper sailboat – it was very cute :)

    I don't twitter…but the artwork is beautiful!

  24. Kellim says:

I tweeted!! Our nursery has stayed exactly the same! I worked in a daycare for a few years so I had an idea of what I would need and where.

  25. Lisa says:

    Following and tweeted!

Conor's nursery is still the same – it's my fav room in the house. It looks like Etsy threw up in there, another cute print would fit in nicely :) I will be sad when he decides red gingham, aqua damask and braided rugs aren't his taste.

The LR looks better than it ever has actually. We had to make space for "activities" because it is the playroom, too. We downsized the TV stand, banished all dvd's and clutter to the basement and organized toys into bins. We upgraded from hand-me-down furniture to IKEA (dare to dream, eh?)

  26. LauraMolSteck says:

The only thing that has changed in my nursery is that his crib lives in our room, instead of his (right next door).

As a designer I knew exactly what I wanted (from bed linens to wall art) but functionality for a baby is a whole different art!!

My son's favorite addition is a music player above his changing table that he can bang on and change the music….other than that, everything is the same!

  27. Patti says:

Well, my husband was overseas when our daughter was born and I was staying with my parents. So her nursery was my room. Now that he is home and we're in our own home, her nursery is set up with her furniture and a couple things on the wall but not painted because we are here for just a few months. When we he gets out in September and we move to a permanent home, we will finally be able to paint and make the house our's!

  28. ellejay says:

That's sooo cool- I also have a nautical themed nursery and don't have much up on the walls, I wish there was another way to enter besides Twitter because I don't tweet :(

As far as how B's nursery's evolved- he doesn't even sleep in it yet!! I was just about to move him in there pretty soon but he's decided to start waking up at all hours of the night after sleeping through the night since 2 months.

  29. Krista says:

The rooms are still basically the same as when we moved in. The back three bedrooms are pretty minimal as we are waiting on growing the family. One of them is in the process of a redo as it is going from my professional Real estate office to DH's School office and my Traditional Toile/pinkie/blueboy decor does not suit his Gothic vibes.

    Sigh

  30. Jenna says:

Oh the nursery. Where I begin. So far, I love it….but that's only because the only things that are done right now are the paint on the walls and my pottery barn kids valance and black out curtains. Oh, and the pottery barn crib skirt to match. I LOVE our bedding and it looks PERFECT with the wall color and crib, but other than that, I'm clueless on what to put on the walls. My style is antique/county, so I like finding things that are a little rustic without being gross. Any thoughts or ideas? Our baby boy is due in September and although I know I have plenty of time, I was a decorator in my past life and it's killing me to have nothing on the walls. :-)

  31. Jamie says:

Apparently we had Sydney's hamper to close to her crib. One morning I came in to get her and she was cuddling with a bunch of dirty washcloths. Haha. It was moved after that.

  32. Abbey says:

Our nursery hasn't changed…why? Because my son is 6 months and still hasn't slept in it yet AND we're moving next week and he never will **sad face**. Oh well, we're doing the next room the same way, BUT we're adding one of Jessa's new creations that we requested…"I Swing Big" was created per my request this week. She's SO great to work with and I can't wait to see how it turns out. Hubs is a former minor leaguer, so baseball is life in our house and she did a wonderful job of incorporating that into something personal. Thanks for writing about her on here!

  33. Brinkels says:

When I was pregnant I woke up every morning ready to make my house clean and perfect. It wasn't just the "nesting" that's how I've always been. I can't lay back down in an unmade bed, can't eat with other stuff besides dinner on my dining table, and so on. My house, the whole house, has changed completely. Every room is chaos. Even all of our storage closets that now house our crap while Colton's stuff runs freely. This could also be while I am slowly going insane.

  34. Kayla says:

Since we were team green our nursery was very neutral. I made sure that I could accent with either boy or girl things once the baby was born. We had a girl so now there are hints of light pinks in the room!
