  1. Kristi says:

I'm sure you'll generate bajillions of comments here, but might I suggest Hyland's teething tablets….Jesus invented them. :)

  2. Mommy2gavnRose says:

    I second the Hyland's tablets…they are fabulous!

  3. Eclipsed says:

I'm gonna third the Hylands and tylenol if need be. Hang in there, the first one is the worst. It's so not fun though and I totally feel for you.

  4. Desi says:

I'm so so on the Hyland's tablets…I've heard that they are a miracle but I never really noticed the difference. I'm sure every baby is different though. I alternated tylenol and motrin on the days that my daughter seemed like her teeth were really bothering her. Good luck…I know it can be extremely frustrating!

  5. KLB says:

I have never seen anyone be so overly dramatic about every milestone in a baby's life. really?

I'd trade IF for a moment in "your hell" anyday…

  6. Ashley says:

Holy effin' smokes, Harrison is looking AMAZINGLY cute in that lion onesie. Good luck with the teething — does he seem to be in pain, or is it mostly just biblical proportions of drool and rampant gnawing? My child has somehow managed his way through four teeth with little apparent discomfort, but he constantly looks like a competitor in a wet t-shirt contest. Seriously, I'm afraid he'll dehydrate from all the spit-loss.

    • heirtoblair says:

He was INCONSOLABLE. ::sigh:: Screamed all afternoon, he couldn't sleep, he was drooling like a rabid dingo, nomming on everything, & shoving his fists in his mouth.

We finally gave him Tylenol, then a frozen washcloth to nom on until dinner. Cold bananas with a cold spoon (that seemed to REALLY help) and we even made the nipple for his bottle cold. He woke up an hour after we put him down & wailed, but went back to sleep…that was an hour ago, so I'm really hoping the Tylenol will take the edge off tonight.

Tomorrow, we get Hyland's tablets & Orajel.

  7. Vicki says:

@KLB… seriously? No one forces you to read this blog.

I'm in the middle of IF tests right now… but I have no doubt that if my husband and I are lucky enough to eventually have children that there will be days that I will want to scream. It's not going to be all unicorns and rainbows.

Also, I don't expect all of my friends who have children to not complain about difficulties in their lives just because I can't stay pregnant.

  8. harmskills says:

motrin seems to work better than tylenol.

ps teething starts, and seems to NEVER end!!!!!! My son had bloody gums today from the teeth cutting in.

and KLB, its horrible, because it hurts them so much and you can't really do much… the poor lil bugs don't know what is happening to them!

  9. Mary G says:

That chewie star thing is our weapon of choice for CrankyPants McDroolsalot (aka Mike…). That and Tylenol and freezer-chilled washcloths. If Harrison is anything like our teething munchkin, I can relate…good luck!

  10. Mungee's Ma says:

Be wary of the Hyland's teething tablets. I know many people swear by them, but I've read that the amount of belladonna is not regulated, so one tablet can have a lot and another just a little. I came across a story about a baby who got very sick after taking them. Not trying to scare you off from them, they just make me nervous.

Mungee just cut her first tooth at 7.5 months. She had a double ear infection and a nasty cold the two weeks prior to that tooth coming in … I had a feeling that she was teething on top of being sick. That was rough!

  11. Lisa says:

Get a paci, squeeze it under water and release so the water fills the nipple, freeze, give to baby, enjoy a few quiet moments. Repeat as necessary. This was the ONLY thing that ever helped us. He could never hang on to the washcloths or teethers himself. We have a constant supply of frozen pacis on hand during the worst of his teething episodes.

Be careful with the Orajel, that stuff scared the crap out of me with the gagging and whatnot.

Sorry he's in pain, hopefully those teeth pop through soon.

  12. Alysha says:

we are on tooth number 7 and its a molar!! You think its hard now.. wait til those come in.. I remembering those first teeth tho!! THey BITE!!! Good luck momma! :(

  13. Hannah says:

Beware the Orajel, our pediatrician said it's not safe (they start gagging etc.) With my 1st we froze pieces of fruit and put them in those mesh feeder things. They can nom to their hearts content. Only downside is that they are a pain to clean.

  14. Michelle says:

Go with Hylands all the way. LOVED it. Didn't use it for our first two kids but did for our third and it works great. All our babies started getting teeth at 4 months. When they weren't quite capable of holding said teethers in very well. Very rough at first. They got the hang of it quickly though. Good luck! Those first ones are the worst.

  15. Anne says:

I feel ya! We actually went to Urgent Care today thinking that Nikolai was sick — like antibiotics sick. But no, there is nothing "treatably" wrong with the kid. The doc was convinced it was teeth. Joy. I super heart getting up every 30 minutes at night and dealing with screaming all day long. Awesome.

Good luck to us all girl.

  16. Stephanie says:

MESH FEEDER!!! Blair, run to Target tomorrow morning and get one of those. They're in the baby section. They look weird as hell but you can put ice and frozen fruit into it and works wonders. Zach loved his and it helped more than you can imagine.

KLB teething is BAD. There isn't a whole lot you can do to take that pain away, and they only thing they can do is scream. And when their molars come in, invest in earplugs.

  17. Stephanie says:

Oh and btw, I literally LOL'd at the pic you posted. You and Harrison look so worn out and sad, but there's this big rainbow in the foreground. WHEE! ;)

  18. Jen says:

We've done the frozen paci with B and it works well – nothing has popped through yet but it seems to soothe him. Hang in there!

  19. Shaina says:

Hylands. I know you said you're getting them… but dang, they rock. Then again, my SIL said they didn't do a thing for her second kid, but worked for her third! So, I guess it's just trial and error. Keevia isn't really teething yet (well, she hasn't had a tooth break through yet. But she's fussy and drooling and cranky).

    Good luck!

  20. Jenn says:

    Good luck!

Every baby is going to be different. Turtle could not stand chewing on anything cold. He gave us a whole WTF look and screamed louder.

Motrin always worked better for us than Tylenol and orajel never worked for us.

Hope everyone has a decent night.

  21. Amy says:

Have fun! Jack has two teeth already and it was bad, but not as bad as I thought. Just remember, it won't be bad for long!

  22. Victoria says:

Welcome to teething hell! On the brightside, Harrison is still oh so cute. Things that work for us are Motrin (from 6 months on) nighttime Orajel and teething tablets, and yes sometimes all at once!

  23. Rebecca says:

Hang in there! My son is about a week older than Harrison and he cut his first tooth last week. I didn't get any sleep, because he couldn't sleep. I think it is the worst right before the tooth comes in. Then ::poof::: baby is back to normal & he has a tooth to show off like a trophy. It is really weird.

  24. Brooke says:

Welcome to the club Mama! Ruby is only a day older than Harrison and she's been teething for 2 months!! And still no teeth!! Frozen stuff is good but be sure it's not toooo frozen or there's a risk of frostbite. Heh. Frostbite. Sorry. Terrible pun. Hylands are great! There's also non-belladonna drops that are good.

  25. Alyssa says:

Yup, that's teething for ya. My little guy started teething just after two months. Thankfully, we have good days and bad days… so it's not one long scream-fest. THANK GOD.

  26. Jocelyn says:

We've just entered Satan's Domain as well, aka teething.

Tonight we did a Baby Orajel and Tylenol cocktail, and she's been snoozing since 8 pm.

    Good luck!!

  27. Maggie says:

Sorry – my little guy cut his first tooth the week before he turned four months – two days later he cut his second tooth. He was one unhappy baby – still is biting and drooling like crazy.

  28. Marianne says:

I don't have a child, but I babysit for a few different families for a living and I've heard that amber teething necklaces work really, really well. They're an all natural remedy. Something like the oils in the beads are absorbed by the skin and provide homeopathic treatment (I really hope I got that right.) Here's a link…

    http://hyenacart.com/inspiredbyfinn/index.php?c=1

They even have adult versions to help alleviate other forms of pain.

Also, the munchkin brand mesh teether things are amazing!!!!

Good luck. Harrison is insanely cute. And you're a beautiful Mama, But I still can't believe you're name is Beth Ann ;)

  29. Marnie says:

All I can say is good luck… it really changes their personalities. My little boy cut his first two teeth 2 weeks ago. We had 3 weeks of hell before that though! It now looks like two more are getting ready to shine through too *oh yay*

  30. Annie says:

We're teeting like hell as well. I know this sounds strange but its helped alot. We cut a thick piece of peeled extra cold cucumber I held it for him and he was sucking on it for almost 30 minutes. He seems to enjoy the taste and its cold.

  31. I think it's ironic that Satan brought you such an amazing gift just in time for Easter.

Seriously, am I the only one who sees the irony?

For real though, I'm taking notes from all your commentors for when it's Nellie's turn for the fiery embrace of teething. I feel the babies' pain though, when my wisdom teeth were cutting their way through my gums I felt like someone was sawing my gums open with a rusty knife that was lit on fire and then doused in lemon juice. FUN. TIMES.

  32. Mama Pea says:

Oh dear. Harrison is about 1 month older than my son so you guys are always like my sneak preview of what's about to happen to us very soon…

  33. T says:

I hate to tell you this, but we swore C was teething for 3+ months before he finally popped a tooth… (Now he's 10 months and JUST cut his 2nd!)

  34. Tiffany says:

I'm pretty sure Dante should have included "teething" as the tenth circle of hell.

We're on about a week and a half of having the teething terror in our house.

Ans does enjoy chewing on a wet cloth. That's the only thing I've found to really help so far.

  35. Law Momma says:

    Here too. It sucks.

  36. Right there with you. Shane's got two teeth and has been teething for well, like, his whole life. Oy.

  37. Elle Jay says:

Yah… pretty sure we are at the very beginnings of teething also. Gnawing on everything he can get his little paws on… er- hands. Do you have a Sophie? My lil guy goes to town on that thing!

  38. Elle Jay says:

Oh- I just read your comment on Orajel but isn't that on the fence now because it can make babys throat numb and choking hazard? Just what I've heard.

  39. Mae says:

Oh man. I am sorry. I second the Hylands Teething Tablets. I cry if we run out. Never did orajel, the numbing/gagging thing always freaked me out. Plus I've had lots of oral pain and the adult orajel never helped me so… guess I'm just not a fan. Piper hates frozen stuff so the mesh feeder things and frozen washcloths etc never helped us.

It will stop. Someday. The worst parts usually only last for a few days and then you get a break. At least, that's been our experience.

    Good luck!

  40. Breanne says:

I just wanted to leave a quick little comment to let you know that I love reading your blog. I am 25 years old, have been in a committed relationship for the past 6 years and I'm not really sure I ever want to have a child. But I do love living vicariously through you by reading your stories about being a mom. As all of my friends have children, I sometimes feel like there's something wrong with me since I don't really want to do the same. Hopefully one day, my motherly instinct will kick in. Until then, I will continue to read about your crazy & fun life as a mom. I think you're great, and your child is an effin cutie! :)

  41. Heidi H. says:

Mmmm, please accept my deepest empathy. In other words, ::chest pound:: I feel yo pain, Homey.

Have the horrible, never-in-your-life-has-your-nose-ever-smelled-something-worse-can't-believe-what-your-eyes-are-seeing poopies started yet? I don't know that every kid gets poopies that resemble mushy bananas & grass (yes, there were weird solid grass like pieces, I kid not.), but mine did. & only with teething.

My thoughts are with you, friend.

  42. Becca says:

Ugh, teething sucks. :( We loved that star vibrator though, lol! Teething tabs work wonders, but I see you've already discovered that! Hope he feels better soon!!

  43. Abby says:

Love the mesh feeder with ice. It's fabulous. Also, we found Motrin worked much better than Tylenol for teething pain.

  44. Anne says:

Hi there :-) I know every baby is different and what will work for every baby is different, just wanted to share the only thing that helped Brooke was just a *tiny* bit of baby orajel. There are differing opinions on using orajel I guess, but I just dabbed a very tiny bit on her gums and it seemed to help. We used Hyland's too- I don't think they did much, but she seemed to like them.

  45. Angie says:

Hang in there. We just got over round 2 of teething Hell. I'm terrified for the next round.

  46. Amy says:

At least he waited until after the 4 month mark to start. My little bug started teething a week ago and is only 15 weeks old! The only things that haved help her are frozen washcloths and tylenol she Hates the teething rings.

  47. Erin says:

G popped 2 teeth about 2 weeks ago at 5 months on the dot… he's not too happy at night, but I'll take teething over reflux any day!

  48. Samantha says:

Bray has the same vibrating star teether! He loves nomming on it. :)

Okay, here is the trifecta of teething treatments…

A dose of Tylenol, followed by 2 teething tablets, with a chaser of Baby Oragel. He'll be content in no time! :)
