My husband and I had a similar conversation about housework and dinners. He prefers to just clean on the weekends but that doesn't work so well with a baby (or my psyche). My mother (who was apparently channeling some 1950's housewife) suggested that since he really likes "real" dinners I should make a point to cook every day and then he would help more with the cleaning. Instead I told him that it was difficult for me to cook a "real" dinner when the house was a mess, especially the kitchen, and I would be more likely to cook dinner every day if I had more help in the cleaning department. Unsurprisingly he's done a lot more dishes since then.
