I LOST FIVE POUNDS, Y’ALL.
Five pounds!! One week!!! & no, I’m not expecting to have those results every week, but it sure is a nice motivator to keep going. But it’s hard to even describe the JOY I felt at kissing those 5 lbs goodbye so quickly. You can do this! You ARE doing this!! I praised myself. & for the first time in a LONG time (like…over a year long time), I stepped off the scale without giving it the finger.
It’s just not that bad. No, really. I don’t feel like I am dieting, which is a glorious thing. The food really isn’t terrible. I mean, it’s no butter-and-ham-on-white-bread-sammich, nor is it a steak smothered in bleu cheese & bacon…but I’ve had a few things (like the turkey dog & pancakes) that honest to God, made me lick my plate. I love that there is no room for error as long as I follow the plan. Since I have the self-control of a 2-month-old chimpanzee, it’s no surprise that other weight-loss programs were a challenge. Sure, you can have potato chips. You just have to calculate the calories & points. Oh, crap. You ate 30? Well, that’s half of your daily point allowance. So either munch on celery or kiss this week’s weigh-in goodbye. Either way, your health just flushed itself down the nutritional toilet. This way, I know what I eat – I select something that sounds relatively tasty from a box of food. If it’s breakfast, I add an egg & a piece of fruit. For lunch, a yogurt & 2 veggies. Snack is an apple & stick of cheese. Dinner is a Nutrisystem meal, 2 veggies, a fruit, & a lick of peanut butter (aka my “fat” of choice). Then dessert! Coffee in the morning, water all day, a Diet Coke if I get a mad craving, & a cup of hot tea at night.
Needless to say, I like routines. I like knowing what to expect & I really like knowing what’s expected of me.
There are certainly still roadblocks, mostly those that I create for myself. It is hard to watch my husband snack on delicious, salty, textured potato chips smothered in onion dip. Washed down with my favorite winter lager. Yeah, that sucks. But I remind myself that this isn’t forever – this is for fast weight loss, then soon I can re-learn moderation & enjoy my favorites again. & even make Pioneer Woman’s cinnamon rolls.
In moderation, Blair. Note to self.
For now, I drink my fiber lemonade (shockingly delicious) & Nutrisystem BBQ soy chips when I have the urge to put my husband in The Sleeper Hold & whisk his chips away to a deserted island.
Goals for Week #2
- Work out
- drink at least 90 oz of water per day
I like to set small goals. That may well be my goals for next week – usually these are the two things that are HARD for me to accomplish. The water thing should be easier at work, just because I can pretend I’m knocked up again (HEAVEN FORBID!) & simply fill up my Nalgene every time I go to the work room. Working out? It’s sad that I didn’t do this before, because it’s about to get 1000 times harder. Nate & I are set to do the 30 Day Shred together after Harrison goes to sleep – one of the reasons we cancelled cable, to make sure we had nothing else to do but work out after a 7:30 bedtime for the small fry.
One thing that is going to be very difficult this week – veggies. I need ideas on veggies. & not carb veggies – peas, corn, beans, avocado, etc. don’t count!
So how did this week go? What did you accomplish? What is your main struggle? Or what are your goals for next week & your plan for achieving them?
p.s. i’m still working on my mclinky settings, but with going back to work this week, that is a project that will wait until mcfatty week 3. so just leave everything as a comment, or link back to your own website/blog so we can all read it!
p.p.s. i won’t be taking a picture every week – how about every other week?

Here's my McFatty Monday post.

McFatty Monday at Marbles Rolling
oops, and here's my post:
http://marblesrolling.blogspot.com/2010/01/mcfatt…
http://changingtheuniverse.blogspot.com/2010/01/d…
We've got a chili recipe and a 6 pound loss!
Oops! Here it is:
http://marblesrolling.blogspot.com/2010/01/mcfatt…
Congrats, Blair! See a change on the scale was always my biggest motivator. As far as veggies go, how about asparagus? I like to drizzle a tiny bit of olive oil, salt, and lemon juice on them and pop them in the oven for 10 minutes. And, they are a diuretic, so they help you release water weight.
I am not sure if I have lost any weight yet, I weighed myself for the first time in over a year last night. It was a shocking number, so I actually posted my weight for everyone to see. I feel like it will hold me more accountable! Also, my wedding dress. doesn't.fit. More about that disastrous new in my post.
As far as what I accomplished, I worked with my trainer for the first time and she kicked my ass. I also signed up for weight watchers online, and researched some great recipes for the week. My goal for the week is to go to the gym everyday, and only weigh myself once a week!
Good luck at your first week back at work!
Also, here's my post

Here it is! http://marblesrolling.blogspot.com/2010/01/mcfatt…
Yea, I'm so excited for you! I also love having a routine for my work-outs and my eating. I was really bad about going out for my runs this week, but your post has inspired me to keep at it.
Do you need suggestions for veggies to snack on or veggies to cook for dinner?
For snacking veggies I love cutting up carrots (higher in sugars than other vegetables, I know), cauliflower, cucumber, zucchini, and jicama. I like to dip them in a little hummus. The protein in the hummus keeps me a little fuller than just plain vegetables. Just make sure you measure out the hummus first, or you could find yourself eating the entire package of it's garlicky goodness.
For cooking: All the leafy greens are good this time of year. When I'm kind of sick of spinach, I substitute it with kale. I'm also quite fond of chard, which I didn't discover until a few years ago, but for some reason I really do adore it, especially rainbow chard. Those are my suggestions for less than "standard" vegetable like green beans or broccoli.
I know you're using Nutrisystem now for you meals, but writing about chard made me think of this recipe: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Hali…
I've made this with just sliced beets from a can (much faster when you're hungry and in a hurry) and used chard instead of beet greens. It's quick, healthy and pretty good, you know if you like things like beets and chard, which I am aware some people might find less than appetizing.
Good luck with your goals this week!
Here's my McFatty post.. http://nicolebuchalla.blogspot.com/2010/01/mcfatt…
Good luck everyone!
Just popping in for some veggie idea:
Asparagus tossed in a little olive oil with salt, pepper, and sliced shallots roasted in the oven for 25 minutes (it is good with green beans, but you said no beans:-))
Carrots, boiled and then tossed with a little cinnamon and splenda (instead of sugar). I normally do it in a fry pan with a smidge of butter after the carrots have been boiled and this gives them a nice texture.
The obvious salad, but add pine nuts and orange essence craisins and lots of crunchy veggies like red pepper and onion.
I have not had much success. My biggest downfall is snacking at night, and having that nightly beer. I also have no time to get to the health club and I fear it will only get harder now that I am going back to work. I am hoping to get the 30 day shred done a3 times a week and also once I am back at work I will only bring healthy foods.
Congrats Blair! That is a wonderful start.
way to go, blair!!!
i wasn't quite so successful, yet…
http://makingsomethinggood.blogspot.com/2010/01/m…
this will be short as i'm typing w/ a toddler in my lap while my screen is split between this window and thomas the train on you tube.
congrats blair and all the other ladies. Since thurs i'm down 1lb and its that special TOM if you know what i mean
i did make it to the gym 2 times as per goal and even stayed for the entire step class – yay me! considering i havent exercised in about 2 years i thought this was a great feat (sp?).
anyway….would you recommend nutrisystem? i was seconds away from whipping out the credit card to order the other day. w/ an 18month old and a 7 week old at home about all i have time to make is formula or noodles for DS.
until next monday – stay strong ladies and focus on those goals!
Here's my post for McFatty Monday. Scroll down 2 posts to see a recipe. http://getskinnystat.blogspot.com/
Also, don't forget sweet potatoes, roasted broccoli, cooked carrots, sweet peppers (cut in small strips make a good snack) and fresh wilted spinach.
Congrats! You've gone further than I have with your weight loss – I hope to catch up to you quickly!
Here is my post this week

WOW! Way to go!! I lost 5 lbs., too!!
Here's my McFatty Monday Post – now I have to go read everyone else's.
Catahari
http://catahari.wordpress.com/2010/01/11/my-own-m…
http://backwellfamily.blogspot.com/2010/01/mcfatt…
Ah, the veggies. Those little culprits that are so delicious slathered in butter or fried. I'm trying to eat a salad every day filled with lots of veggies and only drizzled with light ranch dressing.
Congratulations on the 5 pounds lost!
I didn't really feel comfortable doing McFatty Monday with you because I don't have much weight to lose (maybe a couple of Christmas pounds), but I've been where you are before. Four times, actually.
I totally cheat with vegetables. I drink V8. I know there's a lot of sugar but there's a serving of veggies and no sugar ADDED so I count it. Just a suggestion. I also like brocolli with butter buds or a FF dressing for flavor. I also love cherry tomatoes and black olives (a fat, I know, but a "healthy" one) naked or mixed with some protein pasta and Italian dressing. My big suggestion is to not be afraid to try something and spice it up (NO calories in most spices. WOOHOO).
You're doing great. And I'm very impressed that you know this isn't a long-term fix but a short-term solution. I think that increases your chances of long-term success by about a hundred-fold! Good luck!
http://eviemakes3.blogspot.com/2010/01/just-anoth…
Way to go blair!!! what a start!!!! awesome!
Way to go, much better than my week… I blame the snow. Poor excuse I know. This week will be better. http://edwinjamesholman.blogspot.com/2010/01/mcfa…
Good job Blair!!! You have been a lot of motivation for me this week. Especially getting rid of your cable. I could never do that in this household as my husband is an extreme couch potato and seriously can't function without the TV on (even if he is washing dishes). But during the day, when it is just me and my daughter, the TV stays off. We play, I do homework, she naps, you know the routine.
Sorry about having to go back to work. I really hope you get through the first few days okay.
As for my success this week, here is my link: http://thisisthelifeforme.wordpress.com/2010/01/1…
Hey congrats oncthe 5 lbs! A yummy way to get your veggies in is to roast them.. So quick easy and yummy. You can look up the recipe online but i usually peel n chop yams, chop red potAtoes, a big onion, some garlic and sometimes some squash and carrots. Cut em into like1 inch chunks. Pour olive oil over em.. U can use a littke for drier veggies or more for moist ones.. I soak em. Then use a tad of sea sealt and pepper.. Oven at 400.. Put vegs in a thin layer on baking sheet and roast till they are the way u like em.. Usually 40-60 mins. They will last for days and stay so yummy.
Congrats on the weight loss! After week one for me, I'm down .2 of a pound. Yes, less than 1/2 a pound. Very frustrating because I am working out harder than I ever had (which isn't that much considering I really haven't) and the hubs lost 6 pounds eating the same things.
Our low carb veggies of choice are: salad (duh, but careful what you put in there, not too many tomatos…), broccoli, spinach, zuchini (this is a fave, you can saute it, grill it, steam it, roast it, etc), asparagus (also can be grilled – yum!). You can try roasted roma tomatos drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, yum again!
Good job – I need some of that weight loss magic to rub off on me!
Here is my post!
http://365daysofbeing30andamommy.blogspot.com/201…
Oh…and I forgot to say congrats on your 5lbs! And here I thought my 2lbs in one week was killer. Guess I have some more work to do
.
Just realized today was your first day back at work. Hope your morning is going as well as possible. Hugs!
Here's my own "McFLABBY" post.
http://ourdelilah.blogspot.com/
My fave non carb veggie is cauliflower. If you like thai or indian food…chop it up small and saute plaain or with a small amount of orange juice, curry, and cilantro. (fake rice good with anything)
I also really like it as fake mashed potatoes. Boil or steam large pieces then whirl in food processor with chicken stock. (or butter and cream when you are so inclined!)
Red, yellow, and orange peppers are great diced with salad, or most grilled meats. Makes it more interesting.
Good luck!!!
Go you!
Me? Oh, I GAINED 1.5 lbs. by working out and watching what I eat. GAH!!!
http://babydanser.blogspot.com/2010/01/how-goes-g…
My week went quite well. I'm doing WW so I know exactly what you mean about having a bag of potato chips and munching on celery the rest of the day in order to stay in my points range. I would do Nutrisystem if I had the money but I don't so I'll just have to make do.
I lost 3.8 lbs my first week! Hooray!
My main struggle is EXERCISING. Unfortunetly, I haven't done 30 Day Shred daily but I'm trying to at least pop it in every other day. I just can't stand exercising as much as a kid hates vegetables. I try to trick myself into exercising by going to the mall (although this ends up hurting my wallet) or putting my 2 month old in the Bjorn and carrying him around while I do chores.
My goal is to try to incorporate it more. I can't wait until it warms up so that I can go on walks outside with the little one.
Congrats on the weight loss! We can do this!
Congrats on losing 5 lb….that's a lot!
I love sauteed or roasted broccoli or brussel sprouts. You must buy fresh..tastes so much better.
I halve the brussels and saute in olive oil. They get a little brown…that's good. Sprinkle with a little salt.
Broccoli, saute in olive oil, add garlic near the end. Cook until done to your liking.
Either veggie can be tossed in olive oil and roasted in a 400 degree oven until done to your liking.
Here is a recipe for my veggie crab soup….yum! http://www.lemontreekids.com/2009/12/shelleys-veg…
(of course you can add tomatoes!)
Good luck!
Veggies? Try mashed cauliflower "potatoes." The surprisingly don't taste like cardboard. We like to saute peppers and onions with chicken marinated in light italian dressing.
To answer your questions: This week went like crap. But, I expected the first week to be the toughest. I accomplished a better plan and mentality towards this whole weight loss thing. My main struggle is my discipline… or lack there of.
To my McFatty Monday post: <a>Oh my God, Becky. Look at her butt. It is so. big.
http://beckysdaily.blogspot.com/2010/01/rough-sta…
You GO, girl! That is fantastic. I think all of your lbs landed on me. Baby Girl must be having a growth spurt because I cannot. stop. eating.
I'm proud of you; keep it up!
http://rowserfamily.blogspot.com/2010/01/mcfatty-…
Congrats!!
My week went pretty well, and I ended up down 1.5 pounds. So in 2 weeks, I've lost 2.5.
Here is a link to my blog where today's post is about my journey:
http://theazkahles.blogspot.com/
Wow! Way to go ladies and Blair, 5 lbs in one week is awesome! Way to go!
I am still BFing my 4 month old daughter and counting it as my "exercise," but intending to start working out again soonish
As for health tips, my daughter Ellie, also has milk protein sensitivity, so I had to cut all dairy out of my diet (since the formula was WAY too expensive for us!) and man, oh, man, did the weight really drop off.
Mainly because I ate cheese like I should be drinking water, but seriously, (and I only post this so as to demonstrate the shedding) I used to wear a size 30 in Seven jeans pre-pregnancy…now I wear a 28.) If you/anyone is like me and was a huge dairy girl, cutting back or eliminating it all together (for other health reasons), is a definite way to lose weight. Now if only I were toned as easily!
Also, I have been doing a ton of research on dairy-free diets and cooking since finding out about Ellie's allergy and the whole "3 glasses a day" to lose weight thing is total crap, sponsored by the Dairy Council to get you to drink more milk! Sure, it's a great source of calcium, but so is OJ that is fortified or a ton of other veggies/beans to choose from. It is not that hard to live without it and since I can still have dark chocolate as a treat (60-70% cocoa), it hasn't been miserable and I really have to read labels which forced me to think, do I REALLY need Red dye #12 and a whole bunch of other crap? Not likely…I just crave it because it makes the chocolate covered peanut M&Ms taste even more heavenly!
So, just my 2 cents. Not advocating this as a "get skinny quick thing," but more as a really healthy option that has fantastic benefits!
http://www.godairyfree.org has been a great resource
My son also had a dairy allergy so I couldn't eat any dairy while I BF him. I totally agree that not eating dairy is one of the reasons I lost the baby weight so fast! I fully intend to cut out cheese again now that I've gained five pounds since I stopped BFing!
Just wanted to e-high five another dairy-free mom! It's tough, but it's worth it!
Blair, I am a frequent reader but this is my first comment…
Spaghetti Squash is awesome to eat and easy to cook. There are a million recipies on the web.
Good luck!
Congrats on the loss!!!
Here's my post:

my McFatty post
http://crazylife-jacksonsmommy.blogspot.com/2010/…
I am not a big veggie fan and experimented a lot in terms of sauteeing, boiling, and steaming. But the way I can always ensure they're good is to throw them on a baking sheet, add a little salt and pepper (and maybe garlic powder), and put a little EVOO on them, then bake for 10 minutes or so. This makes green beans, asparagus, broccoli, etc taste so good.
Here's a suggestion for yummy green beans. Just clean the amount you want. Coat them in a little olive oil (I just put them in a bowl and mix them up) and bake at 350 for 10 minutes, turning them over halfway through. Very yummy!
WTG! 5 pounds is awesome.
I lost 3 this week and am happy with that.
My biggest challenges are the weekends and feeling down/depressed. It's really hard to be dieting when you feel crappy.
Good for you!
Here's my link: http://thebabyfisherblog.blogspot.com/2010/01/mcf…
Well the first three days were a success. Then Thursday came and I needed to take the day off of excercising because of a family engagement and then Friday I ended up going out after work. So I *gulp* gained 1 pound. Though, last Monday after I drank only water and tea all day and had no cheese I was able to move down 2 pounds in a day, but as soon as I had my pop and cheese again I moved up and stayed the same until this weekend when I apparently went over teh top. Though, can a girl hope that it's muscle weight from my strength training???
Starting the shred today. I was hoping that working out last week could gradually ease me into my death that is sure to come on again from the shred. My McFatty post will be tonight.. (what you thought this novel was it. nope..)
Great work Blair!
DS born 6/6/09. Goal to lose 30 lbs by his first birthday.
Doing weight watchers. Down 4.8 lbs since starting, 2.8 this week.
The ww app for the iPhone has really helped me keep track and calculate points. Working out is hard with the baby.
Biggest challenge this week has been while at work on Fridays, people bring very unhealthy food and it is hard to resist.
Congrats on your big loss Blair! My McFatty Monday post is up, but more to come tomorrow after my WW meeting…
Congrats Blair! 5 pounds is incredible!
My McFatty Monday update is here: http://juliewalkstheworld.blogspot.com/
I'm thrilled to say that I lost weight, but I didn't lose nearly as much as I'd like. I'm going to keep chugging and hope that these numbers varied because I'm just way more conscious of staying hydrated now. I can feel my endurance growing, and even some days when it was hard motivating myself to go to the gym I went (6 out of 7 days!) and grit my teeth and pushed harder. Fabulous feeling.
That is great! Congrats on the weight loss… keep it up!
Here's my check-in:
http://longandwindingrogue.blogspot.com
I vent about showering. Seriously.
Congrats Blair!! I'm so impressed at how well you did so far! My friend did nutrisystem, but immediately after stopping she gained ALL of her weight back… You have the right idea to use it as a tool for now but also learn how to live without it… that was her mistake from day one, she never had a plan for after. I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to do it, but I'm hoping I find my own successful method soon!
I'm a week late joining, but I was trying to decide if I would join McFatty Monday as an active participant, or my usual lurking status… Well, how can I be held accountable if I'm not actively participating?? I can't… So, my "intro" McFatty Monday post is a week later than everyone else, but it's better to start late than never!!

the weekly saga continues!

WTG, Blair! I liked Nutrisystem – I used it in 2006/2007 when I was losing weight for my wedding – I had good results with it.
Here's my weight-loss post for the week: http://nolasteph.blogspot.com/2010/01/what-result…

5 pounds!! Go girl!
Here's my post: http://to-infertility-and-beyond.blogspot.com/201…
See how selfish I am? I posted my comment about my McFatty Monday post, and didnt even mention your veggie problem. I love Martha Stewart's vegetable tian, and I revised it to make it even more waistline-friendly. It is truly delicious, and you can check it out here: http://chicchickadee.blogspot.com/2010/01/non-bor…
As an idea for a vegtable…
Roasted aspargus or roasted brocelli. Just a little extra virgin olive oil (teaspoon) to coat them lightly, and roast with a little salt in a 350-400 degree oven for 10-20 minutes. Dress with lemon juice. It TOTALLY changes the flavor of the veggie. They get good and nutty (and yummy!)

Here is my post for this week.

Holy hell! Congrats on the weight loss, man. I am a little jealous. My goal was to start working out….I bought some real running shoes (got fitted and everything) and started the couch to 5K. Here's hoping that I can keep it up. Goal for this week–add in some weight training too.
And P.S. You have 2 cheeseball awards waiting for you on my blog if you're interested
I love spinach, broccoli or kale done with chili and garlic.
*Fry the chili and garlic with a little oil,
*add the greens and a little water,
*cover and cook until tender.
You can add sesame seeds and/or soy sauce if you like.
Vegetables are great!
I'm very impressed by the way. 5 Pounds? Seriously? I was going to join in with McFatty Monday, Then I decided to procreate and get fatter instead
congrats on the weight loss! as for veggies and everything veggies have you tried vegetariantimes.com. i'm a dietary vegan (i know, i know please don't throw stones lol) but there are plenty of recipes on there that are delicious…and they have cheese. cheese can be a vegetable…
Congrats on the 5 pounds! I'm a day late with my mcfatty post! But here it is: zainylainy.wordpress.com/2010/12/mcfatty-monday
Woo! Great job Blair and other ladies! 5 lbs in one week in pretty impressive! I am at the opposite place in life right now, 11 weeks pregnant and trying to gain weight
Way to go on the weight loss…that's great! I hope that I have such great success
You really do have a great blog here. I have a blog myself which brings inspiration and guidance to people all around the world. Life is hard enough, and I hope my site can contribute anything positive to someone's day.
I'd like to exchange links with you to help spread some traffic around between each other. Please let me know if this is possible. Until then, keep up the good work.

Jon Benson’s Every Other Day Diet book is an ebook on how to lose weight using caloric cycling. But it is not your average treatment of caloric cycling it is caloric cycling with a new twist. I have reviewed dozens of diets and I have to say that this one is unique.
My favorite way to get veggies is the following:
fresh spinach steamed with garlic (i use the ziploc steam bags)
put that on tip of a veggie pattie (I like morningstar)
If you feel like going crazy, I also like to put it on a whole wheat bun with a laughing cow wedge of swiss.
Good Luck
Way to go…that's awesome!!
Roasted broccoli!! It's easy and really good. You just take broccli florets (fresh is great, but frozen works too), toss them in some olive oil and salt on a foil-lined baking sheet, and roast at 450 degrees for about 20 minutes. You want them to brown but not burn. Awesome!
Sooo…it's Thursday but OH WELL! :] I love the idea on McFatty Monday's! I am excited to read everyone's blogs!
Just joining-7 pounds of baby fat to lose…it ain't easy! I recommend the chili from Body for Life-very tasty, and one batch gives you a few quick lunches/dinners for the rest of the week. (As all Moms know, having tasty healthy meals you can zap in 2 minutes is a MUST!) I actually recommend Body for Life to everyone…but I just don't have the time right now to prepare meals from scratch everyday. I did it a couple of years ago and never looked so good. Look forward to seeing everyone shrink!
It’s great to read something that’s both enjoyable and provides pargmatidsc solutions.
